Description

The home was a place for children that were orphaned, abandoned, impoverished, neglected or placed temporarily. A social consciousness concerning the welfare of children at the end of the nineteenth century led to the purchasing of the house.

The Summit County commissioners bought the house and the 7 acres it was on from Dr. Mendal Jewett in 1889. They remodeled the house, and it was enough for 20-30 children, but there were 60 residents before the early 1900s. They made plans for a larger building in 1910. 100 children were placed there in November of 1911.

At it's busiest time it housed 400 children. The placement of children in foster homes began to be favored over larger Children's Homes. Eventually, all of the children moved out or grew up. The building has since been used for the Summit County Children Services Board's offices.
