Who are the Super Aussie Genies?

Super Aussie Genies.

We are a team that focuses mostly on Australian research, initially set up by members of the Society of Australian Genealogists. Our team started in 2023 and we work closely with the Australia Project and the other two Australian challenge teams, Wizards of Aus and Southern Cross Stars.

We contribute to Wikitree year round and have a channel for live chat on Discord. We have participated in Challenges and thons since January 2023 and hope to participate in many more. We welcome other Wikitreers to join us during challenges, even if you are not a SAG member.

Many of us are part of the very friendly Wikitree in Australia Facebook Group, SAG Discussion Facebook Group and/or the Australia Project team. You can also talk to us during 'Thons' on the Wikitree Discord Server.

If you are a SAG member, are you on our Society's Members Page? Add the category to your profile now!

To keep updated add the 'Australia' and 'SAG' tags to your profile (one or both is fine!).

Source-a-Thon October 2024

The Source-a-Thon is an annual 72-hour marathon race to find sources for as many of WikiTree's "Unsourced" profiles as we can! See: The official Source-a-Thon page

Australian Unsourced profiles can be found here.

Our team includes:

  1. Veronica Williams - Team Captain
  2. Mel Hayward
  3. Danielle
  4. Allan Cole
  5. Jill Ball
  6. Barbara McAlary
  7. Sharon Brennan
  8. Megan Tilley
  9. Alison Palmer
  10. Vicki Hails

Start and End Times

The event starts on Friday, October 4 at 8AM EDT (Noon UTC) and runs until Monday, October 7 at 8AM EDT (Noon UTC).

Australia has multiple time zones, complicated by 5 states also having daylight saving time (usually starting in October and ending in April).

In Australia, the event will run 4-6 Oct, starting and ending at these times, complicated by the fact Daylight savings ends 6 October in some states:

Start Times

Eastern states: 10pm
NT & SA: 9.30pm
Western Australia: 8pm

End Times

NSW, ACT, Vic, Tas :11pm
SA: 10:30pm
Queensland: 10pm
NT: 9:30pm
WA: 8pm

i.e. someone in Melbourne can start adding profiles after 10pm Friday and should stop before 11pm Monday.

Please advise Veronica if you see an error in the times here - I'm consistently bad at time conversion!

How do I participate in the Source-a-Thon?

To join us register here. Make sure you scroll down to the team name and add a comment.

We also have a chat thread on G2G where you can ask any questions or post ideas during the challenge.

Track our progress [TBA here]

There will be lucky door prize draws throughout the weekend - if you are drawn you'll have until the next draw to claim your prize.

Sources

What counts as a "source"?

Good sources can be things like birth/death/marriage index records, military service records, land records, censuses, wills, newspaper announcements, etc.

Profiles with only a link to another online family tree, e.g. from Geni or Ancestry, or a reference to 'my personal research' with no further information are considered to be unsourced.

How do I add sources for this challenge?

Please note that it's fine to add lots of sources if you want to, but only the first source added to an otherwise unsourced profile will give you a point.

  1. . Choose a profile.
  2. . Add a source.
  3. . Remove the Unsourced category or template.
  4. . Save your changes.
  5. . Click on the "Challenge Tracker" button at the top of the Save page and choose the "Source-a-Thon" option.

Team Australia will be focusing on the Unsourced|Australia categories, as well as those from the general Unsourced category with Australian locations, but you are more than welcome to work on any profiles you like.

First, check for unsourced profiles in your watchlist:

  • Go to the Find Menu
  • Click on Unsourced Profiles!

Table prepared at 10.10.2024 02:46:45 (Slovenian time). Condition to prepare list (Country is Australia). Profiles: 1712090 Be sure to add a good source with as much information as possible. Registration numbers, plot locations, names, dates, all words spelled out. Jillaine's Dream Source Help Page has some excellent advice on stylisation.

We'll be particularly working on unsourced Australian profiles (either from the Unsourced Australia category or the main Unsourced category where the person lived and died in Australia), but if you want to be here, then we'd love to have you! It's fine to source other profiles, it all helps. It's fine to work on any profile which doesn't have a proper source, even if it hasn't been tagged as an unsourced profile.

Australian Sources

The Australia, Sources and Citation Examples page has heaps of examples of suggested formats for citing Australian sources and may also give you ideas of where to look!

There are also some excellent citation generators on the Australia Project Resources page.

Here are some Australia-specific websites you can use in your quest for sources (please suggest more!):

Other 'Thons'

A variety of 'thons' are held throughout the year to help improve Wikitree, sometimes including:

  • The Source-a-Thon is an annual 72-hour marathon race to find sources for as many of WikiTree's "Unsourced" profiles as we can! See: The official Source-a-Thon page
  • Connect-a-thon is a challenge event that encourages us to improve the tree by adding missing people.
  • Clean-a-Thon: There are thousands of database errors in WikiTree profiles. The focus of the Clean-a-Thon is to fix as many of them as we possibly can!
  • Scan-a-Thon: The Scan-a-Thon is an excuse to finally scan and upload those photos and original documents you have.

We will add more detail about these when the next 'thon' is announced!

Two tortoises, Hertyl and Spertyl, dressed in their spiffy Connect-a-Thon Tuxedo coats, are holding a large picture frame containing an image of a large bowl of candy-coated chocolates (actually, they're Australian "Smarties" - older than "M&Ms"). Across the bowl is the phrase "Thanks for the snacks (with "snacks" crossed out) err, the 'Thon". Between Hertyl and Spertyl, in the centre top above the picture frame, are the words "Hertyl and Spertyl just want to say".
Hertyl and Spertyl just want to say, "Thanks for the great 'Thon".

To avoid confusion, your "Ask Australia-specific questions on our chat post in G2G. e.g. Is Trove offline?" really should point to your own thread, not the Wizards of Aus g2g thread. You are, after all, separate Teams. Smile smilie (black and white).
