Captain Cornelis Jacobszen Quick: and a New Theory on his death date involving the pirate Captain Kidd and the Dutch East India Company -- Copyright 12 Jan 2013 J. Heath Vogel (8th Great Grandson of Capt. Quick).[27]

The death of Cornelis Jacobszen Quick has never been determined by the paper record. The last we hear of him is in a New York City genealogical record involving the baptism of his son Petrus on 6 Feb 1704.[28] He is listed as the father along with his wife as mother (Maria Van Hoogten). In my research I have seen various death dates the most common being 1696 (which obviously isn’t possible) and 1704 in New York. I recently discovered some records that lead me to believe his death date was even later than 1704 and perhaps not even in New York or even North America for that matter.
Cornelis Quick is not found in New York after 1704 and the popular assumption has been that he had died that year at the rather young age of 44 or 45. However, while researching The Nationaal Archief of the Netherlands’ online records one particular record stood out; one Cornelis Quick of Gouda who had signed up for the Dutch East India Company (VOC).[29] I initially dismissed this record as my Cornelis Quick was from New York, not Gouda and had died (assumedly) in 1704. This record has Cornelis Quick alive and active from 1704 - 1709 so it didn’t seem like a match until I noticed the date he left port: 16 Jun 1704. This date matches with the last date Cornelis is found in New York (early 1704). This Cornelis is found in the Netherlands in the summer of 1704. It is possible that this is the same person but again, why would he leave his family in New York? Here is where the theory gets even more interesting.
In testimony from Captain Gardiner (of Gardiner’s Island fame) one Captain Cornelis Quick [30] of New York[31] is implicated in the notorious “Buried Treasure of Captain Kidd” fiasco.[32] While Captain Quick was not involved in the actual treasure that Kidd left on Gardiner’s Island he was implicated in receiving goods from Captain Kidd (7 bales of silk and 52lbs. of gold and plate among other things). Apparently, Captain Quick had transported Captain Kidd’s wife from New York and this may have been part of his payment. Captain Gardiner accused Quick of “landing” these goods (burying or warehousing them to hide them from authorities). Captain Kidd’s treasure was later taken by authorities, including the treasure hidden in Connecticut by “Whisking” Clarke (who also rode on Captain Quick’s sloop). It is very probable that this testimony by Captain Gardiner led authorities to investigate Capt. Quick and this could very well be the reason that Cornelis Quick left New York. Let me explain…
How could this be reason enough to leave behind his wife and 8 young children? Besides the fact that people in New York could have been hounding him for buried treasure (and possibly harassing him[33]) his reputation was very likely ruined by his association with two pirates: “Whisking” Clarke & Capt. Kidd. The move back to the Netherlands would make sense for the entire family as he may not have been able to get contracts with his sloop any longer in the New York City area due to this reputation. However, what if he could make money back in the “fatherland” and send it back home to help feed his family? The records of the VOC indicate that Cornelis Quick had a debt letter which were structured to pay the bearer of the letter (often not the person recruited). Depending on who the bearer of the letter was it could have been designed to pay his family. So it is possible that this is what Cornelis did to provide money for his family.
The sailor Cornelis Quick returned from five years service in the VOC in modern day Jakarta, Indonesia (called Batavia at the time) on 10 Aug 1709 at age 49. What he did after this is unknown. There is still a lot of research to do on this, but I am not as yet convinced that Captain Cornelis Jacobszen Quick passed away in 1704 in New York. Perhaps the truth is much more interesting…

  30. We know that Cornelis Quick was the owner of a sloop as he was contracted by the vestry of Trinity Church to “cut and bring stones from Monnius Island”. (Stoke’s Icon., vol. 4:393). His grandfather Theunis Thomaszen Quick was also a mason so he possibly learned how to cut stones from him.
  31. There was no other Cornelis Quick in New York City found in the records during this time period (1699).
