Method

Searching

I have used EGGSA for Baptismal searches here: http://www.eggsa.org/bdms/Baptisms.html.
Some tips for searching are as follows:
  1. Check the year order
  2. I find it easier to use the mother or fathers name to search as you will see other siblings for confirmation
  3. Use the mother or fathers surname whichever is less likely to have many spelling variations or interpretations. for example: Smit vs van der Merwe. You may end up checking both.
  4. Check the name for portion that cannot be misinterpreted or spelled differently - for example van Heerden the 3 letters eer or erd will be in most spellings so try them as the surname and use the This appears anywhere in the name option.
  5. If you get a long list after your search use the first name field and again use only 3 letters. Use variations of the spelling to try and find your required entry. Some ideas - use ij in place of y so Steijn or Meijer. Check sibling profiles for alternate spellings especially the closer siblings as the same clerk may have written the entry.

Results

When you have a result as follows:
1755 Sep 28
Anna Catharina
Baptised: 1755, 28 Septbr: 1755
Father: Christoffel Smit
Mother: Hilletje Laubzer
Witnesses: Nicolaas Laubzer en Anna Catharina Fijt

Source: Nederduits Gereformeerde Gemeente (NGK), Swartland (Malmesbury), Baptism register, 1745-1782, page 20. Repository: NG Kerkargief, Noordwal-Wes, Stellenbosch, G5 3/2. Note: Folios 13 and 14, two sides of one page, are almost certainly missing between the current pages numbered 12 and 13 - dates covered would be late August 1751 to early June 1752.. Transcribed by Lizette Svoboda, from photographs of Cape Archives VC 666
  • Take note of the page number : Swartland (Malmesbury), Baptism register, 1745-1782, page 20.
  • Use the index above to locate page 20 and open the related link to check the entry.

Citing Your Source

When using the EGGSA site for searches always acknowledge their hard work thqat makes our job/hobby/joy easier and in some cases possible (from New Zealand).
I use the following citation:
Source: The Genealogical Society of South Africa: eGSSA branch, South African Records Transcribed. A selection of historical records transcriptions (http://www.eggsa.org/sarecords/ : accessed 31 Aug 2018),
and then add the particular Source that appears at the bottom of the entry you have found. as above for Anna Catharina Smit.

Would the profile managers consider making this page Open so that one can link profiles to the images that don't already contain links? The issue is that if an image belongs to a not-open profile/page (and is not linked anywhere else), then no one not on the trusted list can link another profile to that image. I.e. an image gets the privacy of the most open profile linked to it. For example I cannot link anyone to https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Swartland_Baptism_1745_to_1813-68, but I can to https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Swartland_Baptism_1745_to_1813-7 because the latter is linked to one or more open profile. Alternatively, please link at least one open profile to each of the images :). Thanks!

You could ask to be added to the active manager list.

That would solve the problem for me, but for no one else.

Maybe there is a reason that editing is limited to a few and not available to everyone. These are important protected images and sources.

It would be interesting to know those reasons. I don't see the page/images as being more important than https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Swartland_Dope&public=1 for example and in fact, those that one can't link to, are definitely less useful. As they are now one is forced to download the image from FS, upload it to WT and perhaps WT will say it is a duplicate, but in the worst case one will have to upload a duplicate to WT all because there is no trust? Has there been instances where it was demonstrated that such trust was misplaced? I could understand if we're talking about profiles of common ancestors where the wrong relationships might often be added, but in this case I can't see why the page should not be Open. But I am open to be enlightened. :)

I have added Louw-2446 to https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Swartland_Baptism_1745_to_1813-68 - can you see if you are now able to add the image to another profile?

I have also seen on the help page that Public If anyone identified in a photo is Public or Open the image is public.

Although the image can be seen by anyone and anyone can add comments, only those on the Trusted Lists of profiles identified in the photo can edit details.

Public photos that don't include anyone private may be nominated and featured as WikiTree's Family History Photo of the Week. If your photo is nominated you can ask that it be removed. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Photo_Privacy

I am looking to see if there is a way that everyone can access these images without being on the trusted list.

Yes, I can now add other people to that image.

I don't know what exactly "only those on the Trusted Lists of profiles identified in the photo can edit details" means. I am not on the trusted list of Louw-2446 and not on the trusted list of the Swartland space page either, but now I can edit the image detail of https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Swartland_Baptism_1745_to_1813-68 whereas before I could not. Actually I think the above sentence refers to when the image is Public (and not Open). i.e. If an image is Open, anyone can edit it, if Private, only Trusted List members and an image's privacy (and trusted list) is derived from its linked profiles with the privacy level determined by the least private profile.

Personally I think the Space page should just be set to Open because that would allow others to improve it by adding more images and I could move its index (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Swartland_Baptism_Images_Index) to it and update it as new images are added. In my opinion the danger of someone "damaging" the space page is negligible, but maybe your experience has been different.

Thank you for your attention to this.

As far as I can see the free space is open. That's the way I set it up and for anyone to use. It's the whole point. However it appears that the images are the problem. There does not appear to be an open setting on image privacy. I have asked someone in the know and will get back to you about this. In the meantime I am adding you as manager which will allow you to add your index if you wish. Great work with that. It is after all all about colaboration

Gordon, I think you have fixed the problem. Did you perhaps make this page Open recently? Previously I could not edit this page (because I am pretty sure it was Public, not Open), but now I can and I so far I have not found an image that I cannot link profiles to (even if they don't have any profiles linked). Now that it is open, I do not need to be a manager. Thank you.
