Sylvania Plantation History

John Milton (1807-1865), was the son of Homer Virgil Milton (abt.1781-1822), a veteran of the War of 1812, the grandson of John Milton (abt.1740-1817), a Revolutionary War hero, and a distant relative of the English poet, John Milton. He was a lawyer who became the fifth governor of Florida in 1861 to 1865. He reportedly took his own life in 1865 in his bedroom of his plantation house. [1]

In 1845, John Milton moved to Jackson County, Florida where he established his Sylvania Plantation. "His plantation consisted of a manor house, school and family chapel, barns, blacksmith shop, and quarters for 50 slaves. The main crops were cotton and corn."[2]

The land is still farmed today, but the plantation home and buildings are long gone. A historical marker denotes its location outside of Marianna, Jackson County, Florida on Blue Springs Road (County Road 164).[3]

Slaves Owned

The number of slaves owned by John Milton varies depending on the source, but appears to number between 33 and 52 at various times.

"The 6,330 acres Sylvannia [sic] Plantation, ... was built by slaves who were owned by the Robinson side of his family."[1]

In the 1850 census John was in Division 4, Jackson, Florida, United States. The Slave Schedule stated he owned 36 slaves:[4]
