Earls of Shrewsbury

The 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, Sir John Talbot aka "Old Talbot” was a Notable Talbot whose line goes back through the Lords Talbot to Guillaume Longsword Duke of Normandy, who was the son of Hrolf Ragnvaldsson (Rollo the Viking). The 1st Earl of Shrewsbury is the 13th great grandfather of the husband of Talbot Name Study member Deborah Talbot who is tracing all descendants of the line of Talbots.

One line of this family, through Richard Talbot (5x great grandson of Sherrington Talbot and Elizabeth Leighton) moved to India and though he returned to Shropshire his son James stayed and his descendants for several generations remained in India and Burma until the “Great Walk” from Burma to escape the Japanese invasion in 1942. Some of this family did not survive the trek and were either shot or taken as POWs and never heard from again. Most members of this family migrated to Australia after World War II.

Sherrington Talbot

There are a number of Sherrington Talbots all descended from Olive Sherrington and Sir John Talbot.

Their son Sherrington Talbot (#1) being the first of this name, was born in 1577 and died about 1642. He married Elizabeth Leighton and later Mary Washbourne after 1614 when his first wife died.

This Sherrington Talbot and Elizabeth Leighton also had a son Sherrington Talbot (#2) born about 1610. He married Jane Lyttelton, daughter of John Lyttelton MP and Muriel Bromley, on 13 October 1627. Sherrington and Jane were the 8x great grandparents of Catherine Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. Though this Sherrington did not name any of his children Sherrington, two of his grandchildren were given that name. His daughter Elizabeth named her son Sharington, but he was Sharington Davenport. Sherrington Talbot passed away about 1677 and was buried 11 August 1677 at Laycock, Wiltshire.

Sherrington Talbot’s son John (married Elizabeth Keyt) named his son Sherrington (#3) in 1656. This SherringtonTalbot (#3), whose mother was Elizabeth Keyt, was born in Ebrington, Gloucestershire.

Sherrington Talbot (#2) and Jane Lyttelton had another son called Robert Talbot whose son Robert married Jane Badnall and also had a Sherrington Talbot (#4). He was baptised at All Saints Parish, on 4 September 1683 at Ranton, Staffordshire. He had a brother John (married to Katherine Ponner) who had 2 sons named Sherrington, the first (#5) died young (baptised on 21 April 1716 at Ranton, Staffordshire and died on 16 Dec 1718) and the second (#6) (was baptised on 29 Oct 1732 at Ranton, Staffordshire and was buried on 14 March 1763 at All Saints Parish, Ranton, Staffordshire); plus another son John married to Jane Barlow who in turn named a son Sherrington (#7).

Sherrington Talbot (#7) was baptised on 27 March 1763 at All Saints Parish, Ranton, Staffordshire. He died aged 7 and was buried on 19 May 1769 at All Saints Parish, Ranton, Staffordshire.
