The English name Tappenden is a locational name. It means of Tappenden or of Toppenden. Tappenden was a name of a village near Sittingbourne, Kent, England. The place name comes from the Old English pre 7th century personal name Taeppa and denu meaning valley. So Tappenden means one who lived at or in Tapp's valley. [1] "An ancient Kentish family, long resident at Sittingbourne, but originally of Tappenden, otherwise Toppenden, in the parish of Smarden. " [2] They were lords of the manor in the 11th and 12th century as they have a documented coat of arms. "Tappenden (Faversham, co. Kent). Or, two lions pass. in chief, and one in base ramp. az." [3] Approximately 1,000 people bare this name in England. About 160 bare this name in Australia and another 150 in the United States.[4]
