Questions:

  • What happened to Jaakko Tarkkanen, Otto's brother, after he arrived in the United States in 1909? Please don't confuse him with Uncle Jaakko who came to the US with Otto. All I know about Otto's little brother is what I saw on his Ellis Island record, which can be found on his profile page in the sources. He listed Otto as his U.S. contact and that he was heading to Jacksonville, OH. But after that he seemed to disappear. I don't see him in any census records. He might have changed his name like Otto. He might be going by Jacob, like Uncle Jaakko.
  • When and where did Otto and Emma actually get married? Their marriage license came a couple weeks before the 1910 census in which they both listed themselves as single. There's a plus sign next to their date in the Athens County Marriage Records index, which indicates that no marriage was recorded. According to Emma's obituary, she was married in Toledo in 1908. We know the date is wrong, but maybe the place is right? However, someone could have mistaken Trimble for Toledo. Did they change their name to Maki before or after getting married? Did they ever actually get officially married at all? Maybe there's a church record somewhere. I think they were Methodist. I'm guessing they were married before little John came along in 1911, but you never know. By 1913, they were definitely no longer in Ohio, because Hilda was listed as being born in Illinois.
