Book Information

Taylor's Creek: A Story of the Community and Her People Bird Yarbrough and Paul Yarbrough, editors. A Project of the Taylor's Creek Cemetery Association.

This is a compiled community history and crowd-sourced local genealogy about families that lived in and around the now extinct community of Taylors Creek, Georgia. The unincorporated community was formerly located in Liberty County, Georgia on land that is now part of the military base of Fort Stewart.

There are two editions of this book. The first was published in 1963 through Press of the Atkinson County Citizen in Pearson, Georgia (278 pages). It covered area history for the years 1760-1960 and contained a significantly smaller amount of genealogical information. The second much revised and expanded edition was published in 1986 through A Press from Greenville, SC (761 pages). It covered area history for the years 1760-1986 and significantly added the number of family surnames and descendants included. The first edition was printed via a subscription model and the second edition was printed on a small scale print run so physical editions are challenging to find. Use Worldcat, AbeBooks, or eBay to locate one.

Research Notes

This book has interesting stories about the community, especially well told is the reporting about the Methodist Church there, as well as many genealogical family profiles. That said, it should not be taken as genealogical proof. Bev Diaz exchanged emails with a descendent of one compiler who told me that they didn't research any of the facts mentioned in the genealogical sections of the book. The members of the Taylors Creek Cemetery Association purportedly sent out surveys to family members and let them self-report. Some responses were more accurate than others. For example, the entire Bradley family "origin story" presented on page 151 is family folklore at best.
