Finding Unsourced Profiles

  • Data Doctor lists of unsourced profiles by PLACE and 802/803s by PLACE DBE Unsourced
  • Unsourced Profiles This link takes you to the first page of all unsourced profiles. You can click one of the links for a particular continent, click on a letter or on a century.

How to Get Credit For Adding Sources

  1. Any profile with NO source counts if you add a source. This means profiles that say "Personal knowledge" or "Family Tree passed down" or only an Ancestry Tree is referenced are unsourced.
  2. Click on the edit tab of a profile. Add your full source under the sources heading.
  3. REMOVE THE UNSOURCED TEMPLATE (for profiles that have the template)
  4. CLICK SAVE
  5. At the top of the page in green, the Challenge Tracker bar will pop up. Click on this.
  6. MAKE SURE YOUR WIKI-ID IS CORRECT TO GET CREDIT.
  7. Click on the Source-A-Thon option box
  8. Type in what source you added
  9. CLICK SAVE
  10. Repeat!

Don't forget, no matter how many sources you add, you only get one point per profile.

How to Add sources so they count

Good Sourcing Practices

Writing "1880 US Census" is not a source citation, it is just a comment. Please be sure to use full source citations.

Sourcer Browser Extension

Many WikiTreers love the WikiTree Sourcer browser extension, which creates source citations for you from sources on many popular genealogy websites.

FamilySearch.org

  • Sources on this website is easy, they have their citations ready to copy and paste

Ancestry.com

  • When you click on View Record, down at the bottom they have a couple of citation options. You should really be including both.
  • For census records, include both looks like:
Source Citation Year: 1880; Census Place: Mcdonald, Barry, Missouri; Roll: 672; Family History Film: 1254672; Page: 273C; Enumeration District: 003
Original data: Tenth Census of the United States, 1880. (NARA microfilm publication T9, 1,454 rolls). Records of the Bureau of the Census, Record Group 29. National Archives, Washington, D.C.
Put together like this:
Year: 1880; Census Place: Mcdonald, Barry, Missouri; Roll: 672; Family History Film: 1254672; Page: 273C; Enumeration District: 003 Original data: Tenth Census of the United States, 1880. (NARA microfilm publication T9, 1,454 rolls). Records of the Bureau of the Census, Record Group 29. National Archives, Washington, D.C.
  • For other Ancestry records: Again, look for both the source citation and the Original Data citation if both are available--and you might also include Found on Ancestry.com if that isn't already in the citation. For census records this isn't necessary because they are now readily available just about everywhere. (professional genealogists are moving away from adding where they got census records for this reason). A link to the source is even better if you know how to do this (this is a bit tricky because you don't use the whole URL)
  • You can use this template for a link to the image along with the citation {{Ancestry Record|1234|5678}} or {{Ancestry Image|1234|4120587_00757}}
    • See this Help Page for more information on how to use this template.

FindaGrave

  • Find a Grave template '''{{FindAGrave|80993460}}''' the number is the memorial number
  • If you click on the new link to preview the new Find a Grave memorial page as it will soon look, at the very very very bottom is a link to the source citation. When you click on it, you will get something like this:
Find A Grave, database and images (https://new.findagrave.com : accessed 15 September 2017), memorial page for Harrison Laurence McBeth , Sr (15 Feb 1869–19 Sep 1945), Find A Grave Memorial no. 80993460, citing Placerville Union Cemetery, Placerville, El Dorado County, California, USA ; Maintained by Mike Clark (contributor 47478488) .

Replace the URL with the Find a Grave Template so it will now look like this:

Find A Grave, database and images (Find A Grave: Memorial #80993460 : accessed 15 September 2017), memorial page for Harrison Laurence McBeth , Sr (15 Feb 1869–19 Sep 1945), Find A Grave Memorial no. 80993460, citing Placerville Union Cemetery, Placerville, El Dorado County, California, USA ; Maintained by Mike Clark (contributor 47478488) .

eBooks

  • When using ebooks available on google or archive.org - I format the citation - Title, author, publication information - archive.org has this all nicely on the details page - google and others, you have to put it together. Then the url for the information - I include the page number of the book and then if there is a sub heading on the page.

Example:

Vital record of Rehoboth, 1642-1896 : marriages, intentions, births, deaths : with supplement containing the record of 1896, colonial returns, lists of the early settlers, purchasers, freemen, inhabitants, the soldiers serving in Philip's war and the revolution by Arnold, James N. (James Newell), 1844-1927 Publication date 1897 https://archive.org/details/vitalrecordofreh00arno, Page 199 Marriages and Intentions. Accessed 8 June 2017

WikiPedia

  • On the left side of the page under Tools you will find a "Cite this Page" link. Choose "Chicago" at the top and it will take you to the full citation with a URL link ready to copy/paste.
