Plan of Action

  • It might not hurt to take a few of the 811 profiles for a spin to see what you'll be up against and get your feet wet a bit before the event starts.
  • If you're not already familiar with the Style guide it might not be a bad idea to brush up on that. I'm sure some of us could do better with our sources and citations. (I know I can!!)
  • Make sure you're up to speed on finding source info on Family Search and Ancestry if you have a membership. There may be times when you find conflicting dates or places during clean up so they could be great resources to use to determine which might be correct.
  • During the Clean-a-Thon, work where you are comfortable! If you live in the U.K. and are comfortable working on those profiles, go for it! If you only want to work in the 1800s, go for it! You'll probably have more fun and get more done if you work where and "when" you feel comfortable.
Important:
  • In the Errors list: Be sure to use the Status button:
    • Before checking the profile, check the status to see if the error has already been corrected.
    • After correcting the error (or posting a comment if you cannot edit the profile), update the status so that others coming across the error will know.
  • On a profile: Always include the error number in the explanation for your change(s): e.g., "eliminated duplicate sources" - dbe 811".

Details

After working on your own tree's errors, please be mindful of the following:
  • To work on pre-1700 profiles you'll need the pre-1700 badge. If you don't have one, go take the quiz! (click the link to it from this page)
  • To work on pre-1500 profiles, you also need a badge, but they're harder to get, so don't worry about them if you don't have the pre-1500 badge.

Tips

If you finish with your own profiles and want to work on some others:
  • The second column on the error table (titled "Info") is the number of merges that have been done to a profile.
    • The default sort order for the tables seems to be most number of merges first.
    • Click next a couple of times to get to errors with fewer numbers of merges, they may be easier.
  • Work on orphaned profiles. Less chance of upsetting an existing profile manager.
  • If the profile you're cleaning is going to take more than a minute or two, consider editing to add this template to the top of the bio, add a comment, and save. When you finish the bio and are ready for the final save, remove the template. (Link to discussion behind recommendation)
    • {{Profile-box|'''I'm actively working on this profile as part of Clean-A-Thon Team 811. Please leave suggested changes in the public comments or memories areas. ~~~~}}
  • If you encounter a profile you cannot edit, leave a comment for the profile manager letting them know the profile has a DBE 811 error and maybe nicely suggest to them what they can do to clean up the profile.
  • If the profile includes "FSFTID" and an alpha numeric code:
(doing the following process requires being logged in to FamilySearch):
    • Copy the alpha-numeric code
    • Access FamilySearch "Find by ID"
      • Paste the alpha-numeric code in the ID number box and click Find
      • Review the profile that comes up to verify that it is a plausible profile for the same person
    • Access the WikiTree to Family Search Connection Tool
      • In the "Add New Connection" portion of the page, paste the WikiTree ID and the alpha-numeric code
      • Choose the appropriate certainty radio button
      • Click Connect to link WT profile to FS profile
  • Debi - I like to clean up Ancestry imported sources prior to cleaning up the merges. I find it makes spotting the duplicated sources easier.
(The result is no where near Evidence Explained perfect but it makes the sourcing readable and provides enough information for someone to look for the record)
  • Repository Cleanup:
  1. Search for "Repository: R-" , make a note of the number and copy whatever follows the number
  2. Search for "Repository: #R-" - if the number is the same as step 1, paste whatever you copied after the number
Repeat until all Repository: R- records have been merged in to Repository: #R records
Example:
From this:
  • Source: S-1499078426 Repository: #R-1668899733 Title: 1940 United States Federal Census Author: Ancestry.com Publication: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc. APID: 1,2442::0
  • Repository: R-1668899733 Name: Ancestry.com
To This:
  • Source: S-1499078426 Repository: #R-1668899733 Ancestry.com Title: 1940 United States Federal Census Author: Ancestry.com Publication: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc. APID: 1,2442::0
At that point, I usually delete the whole "Repository: R-" line and clean up the new line, removing the "Repository: #R-" number, the APID number, etc. The final Source: S- line usually looks like this:
  • Source: S-1499078426 Ancestry.com, 1940 United States Federal Census,
  • Source Cleanup - the same essential process as with Repositories
  1. Search for "Source: S-", make a note of the number and copy all of the source data that follows the number
  2. Search for "Source: #s-" - if the number is the same as step 3, paste whatever you copied above after the number but before anything else in the citation.
Repeat until all Source: S- records have been merged in to Source: #S records
Example:
From this:
  • Source: #S-1499078426 Page: Year: 1940; Census Place: El Paso, El Paso, Texas; Roll: T627_4181; Page: 1A; Enumeration District: 256-17A APID: 1,2442::160420716
  • Source: S-1499078426 Ancestry.com, 1940 United States Federal Census,
To This:
  • Source: #S-1499078426 Ancestry.com, 1940 United States Federal Census, Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., Page: Year: 1940; Census Place: El Paso, El Paso, Texas; Roll: T627_4181; Page: 1A; Enumeration District: 256-17A APID: 1,2442::160420716
Again, I delete the "Source: S-" line and clean up the new line to end up with something that looks like this inside the inline citation reference codes:
  • Source: #S-1499078426 Ancestry.com, 1940 United States Federal Census, El Paso, El Paso, Texas; Roll: T627_4181; Page: 1A; Enumeration District: 256-17A
Don't forget to use the Status button!
