STEP BY STEP Directions For Error Correction

1. Start by checking the errors on your own watchlist profiles. [New types of errors show up often]. Correct those. [this is a great way to practice before the BIG DAY!]

2. Find your error on the chart below and the century you wish to work on. Click on the number in the box. This takes you to a list of errors.
3. Over on the far right, click on the STATUS button to see if the error has already been corrected for each profile and other possible errors you could correct on the profile while there
4. Click on the name link of the first error.
5. Click the edit tab on the profile and correct the error either by removing the punctuation that does not belong in that box and/or moving part of the name to the correct box [sometimes an alternate spelling of the surname is in the first name box. Or alternate spellings of first names need to be moved to the Nicknames box].
6. Do your best not to remove anything unless it obviously does not belong in a profile.
7. Feel free to correct other blatant errors on the same profile even if it is not a 600 or 700 error. We will get credit for correcting all errors. If you are already in the Data Doctors project you will know what these are.
7. Click SAVE
8. If you run out of errors in your category, feel free to move on to another category not already taken by another team member.

MUST READ/IMPORTANT-HOW WE GET CREDIT FOR EACH ERROR CORRECTION

  • In order to get credit for each error correction during the Clean-a-Thon:

1) After you make the correction, go back to the status button (for me, when I click the button it opens a new tab, so hopefully this tab is still open for you)
2) Make sure your WIKI ID is in the "Status set by WikitreeID" box
3) Click on the appropriate correction choice. Most often this will be "Corrected (hide until next recheck)"
4) Click on a comment "Corrected Name" will be most common
5) MOST IMPORTANT--CLICK ON THE ADD BUTTON TO SAVE THE INFORMATION (it should show as corrected in the status history at the bottom of the page)
6) If you corrected another error on the same profile you will be given the chance to complete the same steps as above for each error. (Multiple credits!!)

There is a detailed and visual explanation on finding the errors, making corrections and how to get credit on the corrections for the team and yourself at Spring Clean-A-Thon Tutorial. 21-4-2017 Edit by DuBois-1189

General Correction Tips

  • Please fully read the description of your chosen error before beginning
  • If you are not certified to work with Pre-1700 profiles, please start with the open 1700-1799 profiles first
  • If you are certified to work with Pre-1500 or Pre-1700 profiles, please start with those
  • When in doubt, leave a note in the biography about the change you made
  • If you are not sure: Ask, Ask, Ask!

Naming Correction Tips

  • Often we will be removing brackets, parenthesis, and other punctuation that does not belong in the name boxes. Do not remove the name. If you feel something about the name doesn't belong in that box, move it to a more appropriate box or to the biography
  • Familiarize yourself with special naming rules at the Name Fields and Name Field Guide If these don't cover something you need to know, please message me

Location Correction Tips

  • Often we will be removing words that don't belong in the location. If it is a description please move it to the biography.
  • If the word not allowed in the field is something like "about" or "possibly" remove the word and mark the field as uncertain.
  • Familiarize yourself with Location style at the Location Fields help page

Where to Claim Your Prizes

If your name is drawn for a prize during a hangout, you will be notified and a t-shirt will be sent to you. You don't have to claim the prize in g2g like during the SAT.
