I hope you're getting excited already for the 2022 Source-a-Thon! This will be the seventh ever Source-a-Thon and we are hoping to do an awesome job again of improving profiles by adding source citations. This years Source-a-Thon runs from September 30th to October 3rd. Keep that weekend free for a weekend full of sourcing fun!
Take a look at the Source-a-Thon help if you are new at this to see more about registering, teams, participating, tracking and badges. There is also a Source-a-Thon Tutorial. Don't forget to check out the prizes list to see more than $4,000 worth of prizes that will be given away over the weekend.

Just a quick side note: This weekend, one Team Member lost a dear friend, another Team Member found out an Aunt had passed away not long ago and another Team Member lost a very dear and furry member of their family. If you have been adding sources to Profiles and do not see your name on the Scoreboard, then you might not be hitting the "Challenge Tracker" button after you save. Remember - tracking is not automatic for the Source-A-Thon. :)

Since we are sourcing this weekend, every song has a location in the title or main chorus.
(Amazon Playlist is available too but Amazon Music is down at the moment).
Although the Source-A-Thon is a race to see how many Profiles we source, quality sourcing is the name of the game. :)
Some tips:
- If you add 5 sources to 1 Profile, it only counts as 1 point. Why? Because counts are by Profiles not by the number of Sources.
- Please do not add Ancestry.com or Geni.com sources if at all possible. Instead use the actual source document citation.
- Please do not upload a document from Ancestry.com since they consider copyright infringement.
- 95% of the time, Ancestry.com sources can be found on Family Search for free. If you do not have a FamilySearch account, sign up here. It is free and very trusted. FamilySearch is a goldmine for sources and they provide the correct citation to copy.
- Try to add at least one source that is not Find A Grave. The Cemeterist Project has monthly challenges for adding sources to Profiles that only have a Find A Grave source. So, if you only add a Find A Grave source during Source-A-Thon, guess what.... you made additional work for the Cemeterist Project. Find A Grave is a valuable source and especially more powerful when added with another source such as death record, census, etc.
- Avoid derivative sources.
Want more understanding of "Uncertain Sources", check out this help page that explains derivative sources. And, for a little more explanation of derivative sources from the Southern Colonies Project (of which MANY WikiTree Virginia Profiles are included).
Want to live chat with other Team Virginia members? Install Discord and accept this invitation. Ask to be verified for the Source-A-Thon. Verification is manual and not instant so the sooner you ask, the better. :) It is a lot of fun and great way to collaborate.

Different from other Thons, the Source-A-Thon is NOT automatically counted/calculated for you. After you save a Profile, you will have to click on the dark green "CHALLENGE TRACKER" button at the top of the saved Profile page.
A new page will pop up. On that new page, make sure your WikiTree ID is correct and select the "Source-A-Thon" challenge. Leave a brief comment by adding your own or use the supplied Comment Hints.
If you do not do these steps, your work will not be counted. :(

But you can work ANY WikiTree Unsourced Profile. You are not limited to VA, WV, KY.

I have been tagging many o'profiles with the Unsourced tag today. As if we need any more!
You can bookmark it with your browser, like you said. The other option is to change your WikiTree settings. There is a help page that will tell you how to use your Scratchpad within WikiTree. I keep a lot of links on mine!!
Also, a lot of us will be on Discord the entire weekend. It's the best way to get quick answers, if needed.
I am new too! I did bookmark the page. It is also listed on my watchlist under the free space profiles. I didn't realize it was there until I created a page with a to-do list on one of the surnames I am researching and saw it there.
...then I remembered....
....why I promised myself I would never do a source-a-thon again. Nevertheless, I'll pitch in. Just don't expect me to zip through too many. I'm too slow and too plodding and too, too curious. Mostly too curious. (Maybe I'd be better off with the turtle team? Is it too late for that?)
Sandy or Mindy (or whomever it may concern). I looked over the list of unsourced candidates and didn't see a whole lot of low-hanging fruit. Some, but not the majority. A good many were out of my skill set, and are from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Would anyone have some guidance to offer? My research has always been early 1800s forward. I have almost no experience with older skeletons. I wouldn't even know where to begin.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Virginia%2C_Unsourced_Profiles has 12,675 profiles - you can search its pages for, say, 184 to find profiles with birth/death years in the 1840s.
I just did a sneak at current Unsourced Profiles for Virginia from 1800-1899 and there are 8,447 (and probably counting!) Unsourced Profiles. Yikes! Hopefully, there are some that work well for you to source.
But, Liz brings up a great point.... Although you are signed up on "Team Virginia", you are not limited to just VA/WV/KY. You can add a source to any Unsourced Profile on WikiTree. I often start on WV's Unsourced Profiles but find myself all over the world before the Source-A-Thon is over. 😉
