Small example showing what can be done with a template and GPS coordinates

Challenge how to help a Wikitree reader to find the location of a unmarked Grave.
Wikitree Keyes-996 is the same as Find A Grave: Memorial #61860647
that tells the grave marker was located at GPS 41.98697 -71.5276

Challenge how to add GPS coordinates to WIkiTree without adding new fields

A template is created Space:TestGeocode that add some text and a link to Google map using the LAT LONG arguments

  • Advantages
    • The link to the map service is in the Template ==> if we would like to link to another map service we just change the Template not every URL. Compare problem with FindAGrave that no change URL and WikiTree has +500 000 links
    • A Software as Project Database Error can easily understand that it is coordinates and compare with the coordinates at Find A Grave that they haven't changed the location...
    • If Wikitree start use more advanced syntax like Geo_(microformat) then we just change in the template
    • If WikiTree is moved to another platform that supports more fields then its much easier to move the data from a template to fields than if its just text....
  • Disadvantage
    • Another thing to learn - maybe Chris can add better support for adding templates syntax... feels like today a lot of people add project templates...?!?!?!

How to use it

GPS coordinates found at FindAgrave Memorial #61860647
Using Google map and satellite view you can nearly see the graves link

Wikitree and templates

My understanding WikiTree is still not a big fan of using templates for external linking. I guess its because it makes things difficult when adding data to profiles or edit profiles.
