In 1905, his wife, Belle M Bridgham, and daughter, Isabel A. Bridgham, lived in Minneapolis, MN, but Barton was not living with them.
The 1930 census says that he was married, but his wife was not listed in the census. Also, his first marriage was at age 20, or about 1898, some 8 years before his marriage to Alberta in Idaho in 1906. Was Barton married previously? Finally, the 1920 census states that he was single.
His death certificate (1932) states that he was divorced.

- An illuminated license plate holder for motor cars, which he says will make them easily readable at a considerable distance at night, is the invention of E. [sic] C. Bridgham, San Francisco merchant.
- The holder, Bridgham says, is both waterproof and dustproof, and is so constructed as to distribute the rays of light equally so that each individually perforated number is evenly illuminated, although a bulb of only two candle power is used.
- "A registration number plate thus illuminated," Bridgham says, "can easily be read at a distance of 75 to 100 feet at any angle up to 90 degrees.
- "The foot number plate will be illuminated white and the rear red. This device has been certified by the state motor vehicle department. By connecting this light with the foot brake it will act as a stop light whenever the brake is applied."
