History
Thalaba Baptist Community Cemetery was established, according to the information provided on site, in 1869. However, only a handful of inscriptions are to be found dated before 1901, the earliest being 1862. The monuments are generally in good order and legible. A small columbarium exhibits eleven plaques. In 1983 Alick & Linly Brewer donated further land for a Lawn Cemetery. The cemetery adjoins the Thalaba Baptist Community Church both of which are obviously well cared for by the local community.
The date on the cemetery sign is misleading. Thalaba Cemetery is on the 2560 acre Thalaba Estate which was granted to Benjamin Sullivan in 1828. In 1844 it was subdivided and sold to many free settlers. By approx. 1850 Thalaba Cemetery was established on land donated by Edwin Marsh. Almost 20 years later in 1869 a small Baptist church was formed which mostly met in the local school. Rapid church growth occurred in 1879 and again the Marsh family donated land, adjacent to the cemetery, for a church building which was opened in 1881.
