Biography
The Brame Plantation was owned by John D. Catlin. Purchased from Henry Brame in 1843,[1] John owned the plantation until he died in 1857.[2]
The Brame plantation was a few miles north of the town of Dayton in Marengo Co, AL. It encompassed about 776 acres. There was a chapel built on the plantation exclusively for the enslaved. Services were held every Sunday, usually with a white minister employed or assigned.[3]
Slaves
There were about 55 enslaved persons listed on the probate inventory for John D. Catlin at the Brame plantation. Their names are listed here.[2] It is unknown what happened to these persons after John D. Catlin died. They were most likely absorbed into the plantation families of the children of John D. Catlin.
