The Jooste Family of South Africa
Approximately 20 000 people worldwide bear the surname Jooste, with approximately 19 000 of this total residing in South Africa[1].
The Jooste progenitor in South Africa was Franz Joosten[2][3][4]. The history of Franz Jooste's death and consequent conviction and execution of his wife and slaves for his murder has been widely documented and researched and form part of the rich history of the life and culture of the early Dutch Cape Colony. Although there have been attempts to trace back Franz Jooste's direct ancestors in Europe, there is not yet supporting evidence of a successful connection.
The most insightful genealogy publications about the Joostes are the Suid-Afrikaanse Geslagregisters Deel 4[5], in which 448 Joostes are documented and Die Jooste Familie van Suid-Afrika by Andre and Claudie Jooste[6], in which 3153 Joostes are documented. Currently (accessed 25 Aug 2021) the Wikitree Jooste Genealogy page lists 609 Jooste profiles[7].
DNA
- There are currently (28 Sept 2021) two autosomal DNA test takers and one Y-chromosome DNA test taker listed on Wikitree[8]. The Y-DNA test taker is also the only Jooste listed on the FamilyTreeDNA Cape Dutch / Kaaps-Hollands group project[9]. From this, it is evident that little genetic genealogy research has yet been done into the deep ancestry of the Joostes.
- The Y-DNA test taker's DNA results provide potential insight into the deep ancestry of the the progenitor, Franz Jooste, and his Jooste decendents. The DNA is classified in haplogroup E-FGC11447. In summary, the haplogroup originates from the Balkans, with various research ongoing about the hypothesis that Roman troop movements from 15 AD to 260 AD resulted in movement west to Germany, Switzerland, England and elsewhere[10]. This aligns with how progenitor, Franz, has ended up at the Cape of Good Hope in 1693. The claim to the Joostes' deep ancestry is however still unconfirmed. More Jooste Y-DNA tests are required to confirm we are indeed from E-FGC1147.
Heraldry
- There does not exist a Jooste family crest or coat of arms.
- Often found in Jooste family history and publications is a coat of arms with its origin from Die Groot Afrikaanse Familienaamboek by Cor Pama[11]. The core elements are a shield with a white or silver field and a red mascle in each of the top quarters, separated by a blue caret with another red mascle at the bottom centre. Some versions have a silver tilting type helmet, while others depict a barred helmet. Mantling is blue and white or silver. Some versions have a red mascle as crest with a blue and white (silver) torse.
- Despite the existence and frequent use of these so-called coat of arms they are unlawful according to the Heraldry Act[12][13][14].
Project Goals
- Confirm or disconfirm the Joostes' haplogroup as E-FGC1147.
- TBC
Task List
- Identify Jooste descendants with a documented family tree back to progenitor, Franz, who are willing to take a Y-DNA test to confirm (or disconfirm) our deep ancestry to be haplogroup E-FGC1147 (Contact JL Jooste to engage if you are willing to contribute to this task).
