The Marvelettes were signed to Motown's Tamla label and were their first all-girl group to have a No. 1 hit single on the charts with "Please Mr. Postman" in 1961. Georgia Dobbins received a co-writing credit on this original song which was later covered by The Beatles and then The Carpenters.

Imagine you are a high school-aged girl singing with your friends in choir class and your choir teacher encourages you to enter a singing contest. Your performance only gets you 4th place, but your choir teacher works in your best interests to get you an audition away - with Motown execs - and you ace it. Then they say come back for a second audition with an original song - and you ace that by bringing in "Please Mr. Postman" and get signed.

This is the briefest of origin stories for the all-girl group "The Marvelettes". They helped pave the way for other all-girl singing groups such as The Supremes, The Ronettes, and The Chiffons.
