In 1770, coming off the heals of some negative publicity in which Matthew Rea, land promoter for Queensborough Township, Georgia, stated he had been requested by "sundry men... from Ballyshannon, and other distant parts to send a vessel to Savannah and stated he would arrange for a vessel to leave Belfast or Newry--."[1] But rather, the ship Hopewell was advertised to sail from Belfast to Charleston beginning 4 Sep 1770[2] when it ported after a trip to New York.[3]. It departed mid-October[4] and arrived 6 Jan 1771 with 155 passengers aboard[5] In effect, the Hopewell was the only ship to set sail from Northern Ireland to southern ports in 1770 due to the damaging letter written the previous year.[6]

Ordered that the Secretary do prepare Warrants of Survey, as prayed for by the petitioners.

Notes:

  1. numbers next to the name represent the amount of petitioned acres
  2. the plus "+" sign indicates the individual is mentioned in Dobson's Irish Emigrants in North America, Part Seven.[8] If the individual's name is spelled different in Dobson's book, then the Dobson spelling is included after the plus sign within brackets. i.e. "{ Dobson's Spelling }"
    1. Dobbs' entry for each of these individuals was exactly the same, which read: " [name], from Ireland, probably on board the Hopewell from Belfast, petitioned for a land grant in South Carolina in January 1771. "
  3. If a WikiTree profile corresponds to one of these passengers, feel free to add a link to their profile by adding their ID to their name. i.e. "Robert Ross" becomes "Ross-5829|Robert Ross" inside double square brackets "[[ ]]".
