During the Civil War he loaned out some of his slaves to the government and was paid for it. He provided Sam, Horace, Benjamin, Napoleon, and Harrison. They worked 40 days each @ .50/per day and Dr. Trent was paid $100.00 for their labor. Confederate Slave Payroll 2

The Confederacy impressed on slave owners to loan their slaves out for the war effort. These loans were documented as "Slave Payrolls" and are now online through the National Archives.^[2]
