Anna (Clemens) Baker's WPA Former Slave Narrative
Anna (Clemens) Baker's whole family, just outside of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and "Aunt Emaline". They were given to Luther Morgan Clements when his father Hardy divided slaves among his children. Anna's WPA interview gives a lot of detail about her family's enslavement by Morgan.[3]
- George Clemens: Anna's father; Luther Morgan Clements took George with him when he went to serve in the American Civil War and George never returned.
- Harriet Clemens: Anna's mother; escaped (likely in the early 1860's when overseers were trying to "mess 'roun' wid[with] her". Returned after the war to reclaim her children from Luther Morgan Clements with papers from a provost marshall.
- George Clemens Jr: Anna's brother
- Allie Clemens: Anna's sister
- Florence Clemens: Anna's sister
- Jennie Clemens: Anna's sister
- Classie Clemens: Anna's sister
- Anna (Clemens) Baker (abt.1859-aft.1937): from her WPA interview, she seemed to be a favorite of Luther Morgan Clements while she was enslaved
- Aunt Emaline: an older woman in the 1860's who took in enslaved children who were orphans or whose parents were sent to the breeding quarters.
