Under Construction

This page will document the role that Mariana Teresa Peregrina da Visitação Xispes de Queirós (1740-1808) and Salvador José Joaquim Durão (1740-1798) had during the attempted regicide on King Joseph I of Portugal and subsequent Távora Affair[1]

  • While still a child, Mariana Teresa came to the Palace of the Duke of Aveiro to serve as chambermaid to the daughters of the duke. The duke and his wife would be executed, among others, as traitors and conspirators of the attempted regicide and Mariana Teresa would be imprisoned and questioned several times.
  • Salvador and Mariana would become the main witnesses in the Távora affair[2] (known in Portuguese as O Processo dos Távoras[3]).
