The Victoria History Of The Counties Of England
Founded in 1899 and dedicated to Queen Victoria, this is an encyclopaedic record of England’s places and people from earliest times. The VCH was established as a private enterprise in 1899, with the first volumes appearing between 1900 and 1908, when the funding ran out. Publications for ten counties resumed in 1910 with local funding, before the First World War brought all work to a halt. Much material prepared before 1908 has never been published. A few volumes were published between 1923 and 1932, when the series was offered to the University of London's Institute of Historical Research. Since then, the emphasis has been on topographical volumes containing extended parish histories, with fewer general volumes. The 1974 local government reorganization, and the disappearance of several counties as administrative bodies, weakened VCH funding. Much published and unpublished material is available online via the VCH website.
