List interesting finds to share with the guest at the end of the week:
  • Antoinette Betton, mother-in-law of Jefferson Long, owned land as a free woman of color in Macon, Georgia in 1860. There are now some deed records attached to her FamilySearch profile that could use some investigation, if I have time. Wallace-14939 13:23, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Jason Wallace
    • Antoinette Betton (1823-aft.1890) was a free person of color and property owner in north Macon as early as 1854. She deposed in court in 1890 about her various land deals throughout the years. Apparently, some of the deeds used the incorrect lot number. Her address no longer exists and is now, I believe, a Waffle House on Riverside Drive. Selvaggio-84 03:24, 25 October 2023 (UTC) (Jefferson Franklin Long (1836-1901) line) Also, see the free space linked below ↓
  • Henry Allan Rucker (1852-1924) was appointed Collector of Internal Revenue for the District of Georgia (1896-1910), the only African-American to receive this appointment. Rucker was active in the Niagara Movement and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Stevenson-3628
  • John Warren Davis (1888-1980) Served as the 5th President of West Virginia State University. He bolstered the school’s faculty and curriculum, making it one of the first four black colleges in the United States to be accredited. Stevenson-3628
  • Willis Elbert Mollison (1859-1924) was a pioneering African-American lawyer in Mississippi. was a teacher, newspaper editor, politician, banker, businessman, lawyer, public official, and civil rights advocate in Mississippi. Stevenson-3628
  • Henrietta (Collier) Douglass (1909-1990) was the goddaughter of Mr. Ringling of the Ringling Brother's Circus. One Christmas she got to visit his mansion in Sarasota, Florida. "I got lots of presents!" (Thiel-559)
  • Charlie Collier (1881-1942) was the owner of "Silas Green from New Orleans" minstrel show. The show had between 40 to 90 performers including comedians and dancers, traveling the country in a special Pullman railroad car. After his death his wife Hortense, who started out as a dancer, managed the troupe. (Thiel-559)
  • Charlie Wong Sing (ca 1865-1929) arrived in the United States around 1885. His second wife was an African American woman. When he died in Florida in 1929 his family had his body shipped back to Hong Kong. (Thiel-559)
  • Charles Carhart (abt.1848-), aka Charles Betton was a witness in a murder trial. It seems some guy insulted this other guy's wife, so the husband beat him to death. He did not witness the actual killing, but he was assisting the wife to locate her husband. Apparently, they were from New York and she unexpectedly arrived in town and didn't know where her husband was or where she could spend the night, so he escorted her all around to various hotels and boarding houses. Selvaggio-84 03:24, 25 October 2023 (UTC) (Jefferson Franklin Long (1836-1901) line)
  • Clarence Lavert Jones Great Uncle of Billy Walker Jones was shot at a Party held at the home of W.H. Califf during a dispute between 'Short' Griffin and Luther Calif. Both Luther and Short also died. (Jenkinson-562)
  • George Dennis Sale Kelsey (connected to Helena Cobb), was a close associate to Martin Luther King, Jr. George Kelsey was a theologian and educator who helped to convince King that a career in ministry would enable him to address issues of social justice and racial reform. Hatchett-114 01:26, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
  • Lewis Woodson, great grandfather of the son-in-law of Charles Douglass (5 degrees), Lewis Woodson was a notable abolitionist, educator, minister and writer. Wikipedia entry Hatchett-114 12:02, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

General WT Resources

  • Editing Tips This page shows basic markup that can be used on WikiTree profiles and Space pages. Please remember not to use tables on Challenge profiles.
  • Example Challenge Profiles This is a guideline on how the profiles can look.
  • WikiTree Browser Extension This addon is great for a lot of things, but the main help for the Challenge is the "auto-bio" button that it puts on the profiles. This will give you basic narrative you can add to. It is also great for adding stickers and cleaning up GEDCOM clutter. Let your team captain know if you need help learning one of these features!
  • The Background Images Category contains pages that you can find a large variety of background images on. Most of them are tiled (repeatable) images.
  • WikiTree+ is valuable for so many things! Here are a few of the search features you can use for challenge profiles: (Go to WikiTree+. In the "Search" section, look at the "Text search" box and then "Text:" underneath that. Leave the ProfileList parameter and change the text at the end to search for different things. You can copy the text below and paste it in the text box. Click "Get profiles.") Thank you Aleš!!
    1. Look for Pending merges: ProfileList="WikiTreeChallenge\ActiveChallenge" pendingmerge
    2. Profiles missing the country in a location field: ProfileList="WikiTreeChallenge\ActiveChallenge" UnknownCountry
    3. Not connected to the global tree: ProfileList="WikiTreeChallenge\ActiveChallenge" unconnected
    4. No parents: ProfileList="WikiTreeChallenge\ActiveChallenge" noparents

    6. Notable profiles: ProfileList="WikiTreeChallenge\ActiveChallenge" TemplateFull=Notables_Sticker
    7. Has GEDCOM clutter: ProfileList="WikiTreeChallenge\ActiveChallenge" GEDCOMJunk
