The barque Thetis of 460 tons was built by E. Gibson in 1827 in Hull, England.[1][2]

The Thetis underwent an annual survey at the London dry docks of Messrs Fletcher, the owners, on 19 January 1848. The master was noted as Cass.[2] Still under the command of Captain Cass, the ship then sailed from London on 24 January 1848 and from Plymouth on 28 January, arriving at Sydney Town on 27 May 1848.[3]

A report of survey for repairs was produced in London between December 1849 and January 1850.[4] Cass was still the master during the survey, but when the Thetis sailed from Plymouth on 25 January 1850, Captain Dodds was in command. The ship arrived at Port Jackson on 20 May 1850.[5]

Another report of survey for repairs, dated 3 December 1853 and 19 January 1854, was prepared when the Thetis was preparing for a voyage supposedly to New Zealand. The owners were still Fletcher & Co. The master at the time of the survey was J. Pook.[6] Under Captain Breckon, the Thetis sailed from Plymouth on 31 May 1854 for Port Adelaide, arriving there on 31 August 1854.[7] The ship left Port Adelaide on 23 September 1854, reportedly bound not for New Zealand but for Calcutta.[8]
