The Wilson Cemetery is home to at least 138 graves. The date if the first interment was Dec 1824. The last documented burial was August of 2001. There are/were at least 44 graves marked with field stones.
This is only a few of the Surnames Wilson, Duncan, Dale, Johnson Baugus, Leggett, Ishmael, Summay, Caywood, Bryant, Turner, Miles, Judge, Wills and Lawwill.
We have found 14 veterans that were laid to rest here so far. We have only found one military marker. These veterans fought at “Thames The Battle Of The Thames”. It was an important battle! They need to be memorialized!
We have located several Masonic Grave markers. The freemasons were a very influential organization of this time period.
The “Wilson” Cemetery is on a private farm not owned by our family anymore and it has not been maintained for about 10 years. My Cousin Belle, Her husband, her niece and her fiancé have been there to cut weeds, clear briars, and saw down all the little tree saplings. They have been there the last two weekends but have put only a small dent in the cleanup!
We have someone who has volunteered his time once a month to maintain the cemetery once we have it all spruced up.
WE NEED HELP!!!
Anyone who is willing and able is welcome to take a day off on a Saturday or Sunday to help. Or maybe you could go on another day you have available. You don’t need us to go with you. The person living in the house is Jack Frazier. You can contact me or Belle for his number so you call him to let him know you are coming to work on the cemetery so he can put his dogs in his house. He’s very nice. (Or we can call him for you.)
We are trying to make our ancestors proud. 🤗
I hope you can find a few hours of time during the week to come out and help. Again the address is: 1874 Cecil Road My. Sterling, KY.
We will be going again soon, but it sure would be nice to have a few more hands to help. It’s truly an interesting place. We got the front of the place clean and Phillip is working on the fallen tree in the center of it.. We still have the whole back of the cemetery to go!!!
We are planning on having an old fashioned “Decoration Day” with a Pot Luck Lunch to clean, re-erect markers, decorate and have fellowship with anyone who wants to join us in Mid-May. (Tentative date set for May 14th, could be the Saturday after if the weather gets in the way.) Please Come out and join us. Walk around this historic place and learn about the people’s lives that lived in this area. One of our ancestors that is here outlived 10 of her 11 children and 5 of her grandchildren! All of her babies are buried here around her with matching markers. 😢🥰
If you aren’t physically able to help we would appreciate any donations you can afford even if it’s just gas for the chainsaws. I am looking into making a non-profit so that donations can be tax deductible. PM me for information on how to donate.
I am also planning on making inexpensive crosses to mark the graves of people that don’t have a marker. If you want one made please message me for an example and price.
Thanks for stopping by and visiting us.
