Hi Betsy,

I'm not super knowledgeable about how all of the G2G stuff works or what G2G actually stands for. I do see the group challenges or project challenges come up from time to time. I don't participate in these because I'm not really an expert at all of this. I do have an idea for a project but not sure where to start it or how to get traction behind it. Thought I would post my question here in hopes that you could help direct me. Here is some backstory behind the idea for the project. I've always been fascinated with the old west, outlaws and how everybody says they're related to one of them. Off and on over the years I've worked on my ancestry through ancestry.com trying to build my tree using free trials when it was available. About a year ago I discovered that General Jesse Cole Lindsay who I had put in my tree on ancestry quite some time ago is a relative of Jesse James the outlaw (James-761). After realizing this I started looking at census records and birth records trying to make sure that I didn't inadvertently put the wrong people in my tree. I never heard of this in my family history so I thought I'd made an error. All my grandma ever said was that we come from good stock. So the idea behind the project would be to use the DNA relatives that have been made available through WikiTree to prove or disprove the claims that these different individuals are the real Jesse James. Wouldn't DNA solve the mystery, through DNA cousins or whatnot. For example if someone says they're a descendant of Frank Dalton wouldn't a portion of their DNA have to match with mine in some fashion? I have a friend who's maiden name is Howard and she claims she's related to Jesse James also. I think it's ironic that there's all these people that say they're a relative or kin in some way but we're not taking advantage of the resources available to prove or disprove all this madness. I've looked on here to see if there's already been a project started but I can't find one, I did find other people trying to determine their relationship to Jesse James when doing a direct name search in the G2G search bar. Thanks! And if this is posted in the wrong place sorry, as previously stated I'm not very familiar with how all this works or how to send a direct message.

Hi Scott,

What a fascinating research project. It sounds like it has a huge amount of potential. I think what you want to do is start a Free-Space Project. Here's the help page with information on how to do that:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Free-Space_Projects

All you have to do is create a Free Space Profile and then you'll be in business. To do that, go to the Add menu (top right) and select "New Free Space".

Keep me posted on how you get on and certainly let me know if you have any questions as you set this up. You'll probably want to do a G2G post at some point to let others know about what you're doing so they can join in.

Good luck and have fun!

Betsy
