The goal is, as much as possible, to tell the story of the soldier. So here are some suggested TIPS regarding information to try to find to include. (Of course, in some cases, it will be impossible to find all these items and in other cases, much more information can be found.)

1. The family, ancestors and descendants of the soldier. I suggest not going beyond 100 years ago with the births of descendants for privacy reasons.

2. The rank of the soldier should be put in the Prefix field — unless they had an important title in their non-soldiering life — like Dr., Hon., Rep., etc.

3. A reference to Albion Winegar Tourgée’s “The Story of a Thousand” describing the details of service found in the appendices. Sometimes Tourgée has a bio and image of the soldier, which should be included, too.

A great way to list the reference filling in the page numbers if there is a bio:

The Story of a Thousand by Albion Winegar Tourgée, pages X-Y, Appendices, published by S. McGerald & Son, 1896
or using this, if there is no bio.

4. Soldiers can be found in the Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio, Volume VII

Use this citation, filling in the page number:

Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio, Volume VII, page X

5. A Civil War sticker which includes the 105th’s regiment flag. This sticker adds the category for the 105th. You can copy the sticker format from here and update the dates and the regiment. It looks like this:

If the soldier served ONLY in the 105th, use this sticker

If the soldier served in the 105th AND other regiments, use this sticker and list the regiments

6. Add other military related stickers.

7. Add references — familysearch records, newspapers, books, pictures — whatever that can help tell the soldier’s story.

In addition to records such as birth, marriages, censuses and death in familysearch.org, look for Civil War pension records, the 1890 Civil War soldiers census and Old Soldier Home Records. These military records often contain the place of residence, the spouse’s name and the date of death. These bits of information can be very helpful clues, especially when the soldier has moved cross country or has a common name.

8. Add categories for military and battles. For battles, add the category if you are certain the soldier was in this battle.

9. If the soldier was born in Ashtabula, Mahoning or Trumbull counties, you can add the Ohio Appalachian sticker. Sometimes a soldier is born in Appalachia in New York or Pennsylvania, so those stickers are here to copy as needed, too.

... ... ... was born in Appalachia, in Ohio.

10. Anyone who was born and lived in Ohio can have the Ohio sticker added to their profile.

... ... ... was an Ohioan.
Ohio Sticker

Let me know the soldiers you’re working on - and when you finish - for tracking purpose.

Thanks again for the help!
