Tirau Cemetery

Situated in a farming town at 176 Okoroire Rd, Tirau 3485.

Corner of Okoroire Rd and Heatherington Rd
South Waikato District
New Zealand

Tirau was planned as a large-scale city for the Waikato, and was called Oxford. However plans were changed after the entrepreneurial Rose family bought up large volumes of land in the region with the intention of making large returns when it came of high demand. Oxford later became a rural service town and changed its name to Tirau in 1896. By the late 1980s Tirau was on the decline as a township with population and business falling.

The town is now a well known tourist stop-off and is characterised by many local art works in the town made out of discarded corrugated iron.

New Zealand Cemeteries Team

This page is maintained by the New Zealand Cemeteries Team, who are part of the Global Cemeteries Project (and the Oceania Cemeteries Team). The aim is is to document the final resting place of those buried in New Zealand, to ensure that each cemetery has its own free-space page, which is linked to the category structure for Global Cemeteries, and that those buried in them are also gathered in the correct category.

  • Currently there are 1 profiles listed on Wikitree for this cemetery, which is well short of the number of interments. Findagrave has 670 entries, and Billion Graves has 2.

The overall progress of this endeavour will be found on the NZ Cemeteries Team Progress page.
