Research Notes

It appears very likely that Joseph Tissott, was not born in England, but instead was a Frenchman (born in France). There are Staffordshire Court Records that record Joseph Tissott as being robbed on his way home to Brewood by John Hodgkiss and John Field of a tobacco box, one sovereign and five shillings. The verdict was guilty with a judgement of death is noted. Importantly, the judge and prosecutors note that ".. the prosecutor is an old Frenchman and it was with difficulty that they could understand his broken English. The constable said that Hodgkiss had the tobacco box on this person and that Hodgkiss denied robbing the Old Frenchman" . www.findmypast.co.uk [1]

Census Birthplace - Holland or New Holland Examination of the 1841 Census image more likely states in the column for "Birthplace- Out of County, England, Ireland, Foreign", here the note is "Non - Holland", not New Holland. There is an underscore beneath "Non" and Holland is likely a guess by the person recording the details. This further supports the fact that Joseph was "French". www.findmypast.co.uk [2]

Joseph as a POW in England from Napoleonic conflicts There is speculation that Joseph was a french Prisoner of War as a sailor in the Napoleonic conflicts. There are at least 3 candidates according to Findmypast, however, these records refer to a Joseph M and we have not seen Joseph refered to as a Joseph M so these may not be valid. The pages are here www.findmypast.co.uk [3]

New Holland as a village, Lincolnshire According to experts, New Holland as a village (the one in Lincolnshire) did not properly exist until the coming of the railway in 1848, though it had been the site of a ferry across the Humber before that. When the name New Holland first came into use (possibly with the railway?) has not been found. However an Ordnance Survey map of 1803 shows its location as [Barrow Ferry https://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/maps/sheet/os_unions_1803_1838_se/Hull_1803_1838] So it seems unlikely that someone would say they were born in New Holland in the mid-1700s in the 1841 census if the village name was not yet in existance.

In the meantime, we are reasonably confident that Joseph was a frenchman, birthplace unknown

There is an extended family of Tissett's in the west countries that will be explored

There is a Henry Tissett in hospital in 1794. Records from a French source have two possibilities of sailors captured and transferred from a ship the Temeraire, These correspond to the Joseph M above. However it is likely that Joseph M is NOT our Joseph as we have never found a reference to his second name.
