About the Project
The Toles Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Toles name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Toles name.
There are many different theories on the origin of this surname and the meaning. There are indigenous populations in India and Columbia with the surname Tole. However the majority of Toles/Tolles in the United States of America are of European ancestry. The earliest documented Tolles, Henry Tolles Sr. (abt.1630-aft.1708), is believed to be an immigrant from England. However, the authors of Tolles in America were not able to find any ship records to account for his arrival in the Colony of Connecticut, looking at many different spelling variations. They also identified a Charles Tolles who immigrated to the United States of America from Prussia in the 1800's. It will be interesting to see if spelling variations give us any clues.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Toles's), by time period (18th Century Toles's), or by topic (Toles DNA, Toles Occupations, Toles Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

In Engter, near Osnabrück, Germany there was a small farm called Thöle, see https://wiki.genealogy.net/Engter_(Bramsche)/Hof_Th%C3%B6le Since this is a small farm, there is likely a much larger farm in the wider area of Osnabrück, too, by the same name, but that I am not sure of.
I can only imagine that the older way of spelling Thöle as Töle might have been anglicised to Tole at some point. But also Toele or Thoele might be possible. Best regards Sven
