About the Project
The Toombs Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Toombs name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Toombs name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Toombs's), by time period (18th Century Toombs's), or by topic (Toombs DNA, Toombs Occupations, Toombs Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.
This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about the surname Toombs and its variants. Our hope is that begining and experienced genealogist alike share with all researchers willing join our study and make it your own. please help make it a valuable reference point for all people studying branches that cross or intersect. Please contact the project leader, add categories to your profiles, add your questions to the bulletin board, add details of your name research, etc.
Many of the Toombs Histories, resources and trees/branches we read originate from England to the United States by way of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Austrailia. They have spread all over the US. Many families are found in Massachusetts, Virgina, Utah, Georgia, Alabama, and Texas to name a few. Help us with your stories, post link to your researchpages you are willing to share, Thanks.
Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel
Facinating is the major influence the Toombs have had on the US as Settlers and Planters. Lets take James Toombs who left Potters Ferry aka poterspury England. He left on the "Colorado" ship from Liverpool in 1848 with his wife Ann Goldsworth and eight children,
William
Hanna Sophia
James
Elizabeth
George
Mary Ann
Joseph
John.
Aboard this steam ship were 600 others gathered by Mormon president Franklin D Richards and Church leader William B Preston. After arrival in New York they headed west, possibly Kansas where they organized by families into one of the largest wagon trains of the day.
Wagon Master John Doddle and company led them on to Salt Lake Valley arriving 20 October 1868.
There are a many examples where similar sounding surnames such as Toms, Tombs, Tomes Tooms,(some have changed either legally or in spelling). There are many variants, but the most common are Tombs and Toomes. We learned that you cannot always absolutely prove where something came from or how, but if there are enough common traces then it is reasonably certain to be right.
Just where did the name originate from? Some starting point for researching back in time.
