[Note: all subsequent entries were obviously done by a different person with shakier handwriting that slopes upward to the right. All previous data were entered in very neat and level handwriting by the same person and apparently during one sitting. The entries that begin here appear to have been entered contemporary with the events cited.]

[Note: the final two entries were apparently entered at still different times but in the same handwriting as the previous four. This further supports the theory that they were probably entered as the events transpired.]

Edward Garrigues departed this life the 5th day of the 1st month 1845 at 20 minutes before 11 o’clock at night and was buried on the 4th day following at Darby burial grounds.

The Genealogy of a Garrigues Family, Electronic Library, online (http://www.garrigus-family.com), Robert Garrigus, rgarrigus@hotmail.com (9579 Sea Shadow, Columbia, MD 21046), downloaded (add date). Mr. Garrigus further cites: Family Data, Benjamin Garrigues Family Bible, King James Edition, (Edinburgh: Printed by James Watson. Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty MDCCXXII [1722] Cum Privilegio), unpaginated, original in the holdings of the Friends' Historical Library (McCabe Library Building), Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA, Genealogical Data transcribed by Robert Garrigus on January 18, 2002. The first page contains the inscription "Benjamin Garrigues from his Father Edward Garrigues." The remaining provenance of the bible is not conclusively known but is annotated as having been loaned to the library in 1934 by "Sarah H. Jones of Conshohocken, NJ." Benjamin's daughter Margaret married John L. Jones on February 4, 1840. It is very possible or even likely that Sarah was a granddaughter of Margaret and John and that the bible was passed in that manner.[1] Of note is that the family data contained in this bible matches exactly (to the letter) the same information contained in the journal of Edward Garrigues currently in the holdings of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania at 1300 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA. The initial family information on Samuel and family was written in this bible by the same person at the same time and was not entered as events occurred. However, subsequent entries beginning with the death of Margaret (née Price) Garrigues in 1812 are entered in a different hand. One person also did these entries but appear to have been entered contemporary with the stated events. Edward Garrigues probably entered the original data prior to presenting the bible to his son Benjamin. Benjamin and/or his wife Anna probably added the subsequent entries. Therefore, I interpret this information as very reliable source providing direct evidence on the families of Samuel and Mary (née Ralph) Garrigues and their progeny for at least two generations as annotated.

End Notes

  1. John L. Jones's line is not the only Jones who one of his daughters married. Sarah Wood Jones is descended from Benjamin via his daughter Sarah and Sarah's daughter Emma C (Wood) Jones (1849-1931) and lived in Conshohocket, Pennsylvania in 1910 (not Conshohocken, NJ. There doesn't appear to be a Conshohocken in New Jersey.)
