Will of Robert Coggrave of Newton in the Parish of Blacktoft 29th July 1748

In the name of God Amen ! I Robert Coggrave of Newton in the Parish of Blacktoft in the County of York Yeoman being aged(?) and weak of body, but through the God’s mercy of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament concerning the disposal of all my worldly estate which after committing my soul to God that gave it and my body to the earth I do dispose of as followeth

First I give and devise unto Robert Coggrave my eldest son all that my messuage or tenement situate and being in Sandholme with the garth and appurtenances thereunto belonging and also all those my lands in the several fields of Gilberdyke containing by estimation three acres now in possession of Thomas Frost, to the use and behoof of him the said Robert Coggrave my son and his heirs and assigns forever.

Also I give and devise unto Richard Coggrave my younger son all that my messuage or tenement situated and being in Hemingborough in the aforesaid County of York with the garths orchards and appurtenances in possession of Pocklington spinster to the use and behoof of my said son Richard Coggrave and his heirs and his assigns forever.

Also I give and devise unto my said son Richard Coggrave and his heirs forever all those my lands containing by estimation two acres and one rood (be the same more or less) with the appurtenances lying and being in Scalby fields in possession of John Hessey.

Also I give unto my two granddaughters Mary Leighton and Elizabeth Leighton each the sum of four pounds. Also I give unto my grandson John Watson the sum of five pounds. Also I give unto Hannah Coggrave my daughter the sum of thirty pounds and one featherbed which she shall choose. Also I give unto Margaret, Jane and Hannah my three daughters each one guinea to buy them gowns.

All the rest of my goods and chattels, the above mentioned legacies and my funeral expenses being discharged, I give unto Robert Coggrave and Richard Coggrave aforenamed(?) my sons whom I do make and constitute and appoint joint executors of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have to these presents set my hand and seal this twenty ninth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty eight.
