Gilchrist to Clarissa
Know all men by these presents that I Robert Gilchrist of the county of Union State of Kentucky having heretofore made my last will and testament in which I have mentioned my woman Clarissa now a slave, owing service to me and such and who has long faithfully served me in that capacity. But upon further and more mature deliberation I have a wish to see her free during my lifetime have determined to emancipate her. Therefore I do hereby Emancipate, set free and liberate the aforesaid Clarissa, now about Forty five years of age, of a yellow complexion, demure look, and modest behaviour releasing her from me, my heirs and all others from this time henceforth and restoring her to what I conceive her natural liberty.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at my house this 20th day of October AD 1834

Ann Eliza Gilchrist
At a County Court holden for Union County at the Courthouse in Morganfield on the _____ day of February 1837. This deed of Emancipation from Robert Gilchrist liberating his slave Clarissa was in open court proven to be the act and deed of the said Robert Gilchrist by the oaths of William F. H. Holeman and Ann Eliza Gilchrist two of the subscribing witnesses thereto, and was by the court ordered to be recorded. And was together with this certificate duly admitted to record in my office.
