The Tuisko, a bark, was a three-masted sailing vessel. It's fore and main masts were square-rigged, while the third one was rigged fore-and-aft. The Tuisko was built in Brake in 1855. At this time, Brake was in the Grandduchy of Oldenburg. The ship was 46m (150 ft) long and 9.50m (31 ft) wide with a weight of 170 Commerzlast[1].

The ship is mentioned in the novel "Justina Tubbe" by Gisela Laudi.[2]

Maiden Voyage
The Tuisko's maiden voyage took her from Bremerhaven to New Orleans, where she arrived on 30 October 1855 with 319 passengers, among them 46 children under the age of 10 (18 of these 46 were still babies). Eight passengers died on her maiden voyage.
Renovation
After more than a decade in service, her hull had been iron-plated in September 1866. By 1866, she was sailing twice per year between Bremerhaven and New York, that is once before the hurricane season, and once right afterwards.
Journeys
Below is the start of a still very incomplete list of Tuisko journeys. Please feel encouraged to update, amend or correct the information, should you be able to - or simply leave a comment.
Special Events
On 27 October 1869, the Liverpool Mercury reported about the Tuisko rescuing the crew of the barque Chill from Glasgow. The Chill had left Glasgow on 15 May 1869 for Hong Kong with a cargo of iron and coals. On 7 August 1869 the ship came into heavy weather and the vessel had sprung a leak. The Tuisko under captain Gerlach saved the crew of the Chill on 23 August 1869 and brought them safely to St. Helena after a journey of 30 days on 21 September 1869.[3]
