The first people to hold the Turvey surname and to pass it to their children lived in England in the 1200s. The first mention of the surname is near the village of Turvey, Bedfordshire, from where the surname is understood to have originated. The village of Turvey was first settled in Saxon times and was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. By the time of the first census in 1841 there were around 600 Turveys living in England (out of a population of 16 million). They were concentrated in the three counties closest to the village of Turvey - Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire - plus Worcestershire where a successful branch of the family had settled in the 1500s.

British settlement of Australia started in 1788 with the penal colony of Botany Bay, which included over a thousand settlers. Over the next 80 years, another 160,000 convicts were transported to Australia from Britain. In addition, over 2.5 million free settlers came from Britain up to 1900. There are currently around 8 million people in Australia who are descended from these British settlers, including around 1,000 Turveys.[1][2]
