This page describes the Tyson families of Osceola County from the creation of Osceola County in 1887 to approximately 1950.

Statistics

Origins

Several Tysons settled in Osceola County, Florida before 1900. Some of them are clearly related to John Tyson and Mariah (Buford) Tyson as descendants.

Descendants of Joel & Dolly Tyson

Some of the Osceola Tysons descended from a common ancestor Joel Tyson (1790-1865) and Dolly Tyson(abt.1791-abt.1850. Joel, Dolly, and their large family were living in Florida as recorded by the 1830 census. Several of his children settled in what is now Osceola County, Florida. Although some descendants moved on to other states such as California and Mississippi, many descendants of Joel and Dolly remained close to Osceola County and were buried there.

Other Tyson Migrations into Osceola County

Wash Tyson (abt.1868-aft.1940) in 1930s. He lived in Osceola County with his family around 1935. They lived in the area of the railroad workers. Before this, he was in Alabama and returned there, however it appears that some of his family stayed. It is unclear if this family had a relationship to Osceola prior the 1930s.

Here is a directory of Tysons that are associated with Osceola County, Florida. Only deceased Tysons are listed. As this is intended to be a comprehensive list, it may include some Tysons that are not related. The spelling Tison is also included. The following list is in work and NOT complete.

Fecundity

Many of the families are prolific with a large number of descendants, however there are a significant number of them that are entirely barren despite marriages and in some cases step-children. This suggests there is something cultural, environmental, or genetic factor. Although the latter cannot be ruled out, there is clearly some hardship and/or cultural values behind the lack of children in some groups. For example, the 1950 census entry for Victoria Tyson (widowed in 1928) shows three bachelor sons farming at home (Spencer 60, Carl 49, Leon 41). Many of Victoria's children married later in life due to having many responsibilities.
