The US Black Heritage Project's Connecting Challenge has been created with the goal of adding as many profiles for the Black community as possible to WikiTree.
Why this challenge?
- To increase the representation of Black American profiles on WikiTree.
- The more profiles we add, the easier it will be to connect families to the Global Tree.
Our goal for 2023 is a total of 250,000 profiles with the African-American sticker. Watch for the monthly g2g post for a regular update of our numbers.
This challenge is very similar to the WikiTree Connect-A-Thon with a few exceptions. See our rules below.
Who can participate? Any WikiTree member who has upgraded from guest membership and has signed the honor code.
Start/End: This challenge begins on the 1st of each month and ends on midnight on the last day of the month. A new g2g post will be available on the 1st of the next month.

Rules
- These profiles are specifically for the U.S. Black community. However, we do not want to exclude non-black members of the same family. Those will also be counted.
- Each profile created must be attached to an existing profile. You may create a brand new profile and then create and attach profiles to that first profile. But you will receive no points for the first profile.
- Each profile created must have at least one good source. Please see this help page for more information on sourcing.
- Please add the {{African-American Sticker}} to each newly created African-American profile, under the biography heading.
- You may remove yourself as manager from these profiles if you do not wish to keep it on your watchlist.
- If the profile is that of a notable, please post on your g2g answer so the US Black Heritage Project can add it to our list.
- Working to create slave profiles? These count too if you link them to their slave owner in the profile. The slave owner's profile serves as the first profile and does not count for points.
Points
- Each profile attached to an existing profile gives you one point.
- Please use the Challenge Tracker to track how many profiles you create.
When you create a new profile, a dark green button will appear at the top of the profile that says "challenge tracker." Click that, then make sure your Wiki-ID is in the ID box and that you choose USBH Connecting challenge. Then save.

How to Participate
- Post an answer on each month's g2g challenge post that you will be participating for that month.
- Create profiles following the rules above.
- Use the Challenge Tracker to track each profile as soon as you have created it. (see above for instructions)
Profiles to Start With
Do you need some profiles to start with and add family to?
- Try some of our notables managed by the US Black Heritage Project. The list is here on this category page.
- We also have a "needs profiles created" category here.
- If you are familiar with the process of how to document slaves, check the "Needs slave profiles" category for pages and profiles with names of slaves listed who don't have profiles created yet.
Tracking
We will track the total number of profiles created per WikiTree member for each month (as well as a running total for the year) and how many profiles created overall on this spreadsheet. Numbers for the month may not correspond to the tracker due to some profiles for other challenges accidentally being counted for ours and participants manually adding their numbers to the g2g post.

FAQs
- Can I create profiles for my own family members?
- Absolutely! As long as you follow the rules listed above, they will count for points.
- Do I have to stay as profile manager (PM) for the profiles I create?
- No. Feel free to orphan them. However, please make sure you've added the {{African-American Sticker}} so our project can keep track of them. If they are notable, please let us know on your g2g answer and the project will pick up management for them.
- Can I create a brand new profile and add family for them or do I have to work on existing profiles?
- You can add a brand new profile and add family to that profile. However, the first profile does not count as a point because it won't be connected to anyone at the start. All family you connect to that first profile do count as a point each.
- How many profiles do I need to create?
- As many as you have time for. There is no minimum required to participate. And you can create them any day of the month you choose.
- Why does only family we connect count?
- Adding profiles to WikiTree without attached family is not as powerful as adding profiles already connected to some of their family. It makes it easier for descendants to find them and easier to avoid duplicates.
- I'm working on adding a Black family, but some of the family members aren't Black. Do they count if I add them?
- Absolutely yes! We do not want to exclude any family members for this challenge. Just remember that they will not get the African-American sticker added to their profiles. (note: race is usually listed on many USA documents such as census, birth, death, and marriage, so you can know who qualifies for the sticker, but it's best to check more than one record because they were not always accurate)

I want to participate in this project. I see that some of my ancestors already have the black heritage sticker. How can I have the sticker for other members of the family listed?
Please let us know how this is to be handled. A mixed couple and their children later passing as white... I had put USBH stickers on all descendants but they were removed. Shouldn't at least the couple's children have stickers?? These are my relatives and I have more situations such as this...

Thanks, Patty
Sorry for any confusion. I answered on your family profile, but wanted to answer here too in case someone else has the same question. The sticker is used for all Black Americans who lived in the USA, even those passing as white. It can also be used for their children and descendants. (however it is NOT used for the non-black spouses or their families because they have no African ancestry). For the descendants however, it gets trickier because many descendants don't know they have black heritage. In those cases either the African-American sticker or the African Ancestry sticker can be used. If it's your own family, you can decide. I would add a short note in the bio though so others who come along will see why that sticker is there. Emma
