If you need a new slave or slave owner category, please take the time to create all three for the county: slavery, slave, and slave owner. It makes not sense to have one without the others.
Please keep the landing pages for the categories clean. There should be no more than a sentence or two added about that location, if needed, in addition to what you will copy/paste from below. If you want to share additional information, please create a space page.

State Level Categories
Please do not create state level categories without checking with the project first. Most of the states where enslaved ancestors are expected to be found have been created.
For simplicity we do not use historical state names (such as Indian Territory), however we do use historical county names.
County Level Slavery
- These should be written as County Name, State Name, Slavery
- Example: Caroline County, Virginia, Slavery
- Don't forget to add the commas and change out the location names!
Copy/Paste this template and the explanation text at the top of the category page upon creation:
- {{CategoryInfoBox Slavery
- |name=Caroline County, Virginia, Slavery
- |parent=Virginia, Slavery
- |location=Caroline County, Virginia
- |spacepage=Slavery, United States of America
- |profiles=no
- }}
The slavery categories exist to help with tracking the genealogy and family history of pre-Civil War era slaves. See the [[Space:US_Black_Heritage:_Heritage_Exchange_Portal|Heritage Exchange Portal]] for more information on how to document slaves and slave owners. '''This is a container category for space pages and sub-categories only. Please only add profiles to the slave or slave owner categories found below.'''
County Level Slave Owners
- These should be written as County Name, State Name, Slave Owners
- Example: Caroline County, Virginia, Slave Owners
- Don't forget to add the commas and change out the location names!
Copy/Paste this template and the explanation text at the top of the category page upon creation:
- {{CategoryInfoBox Slavery
- |name=Caroline County, Virginia, Slave Owners
