Get Involved: Profile Improvement Tasks
- Create new profiles of people from the African American Community. You do not need to stay as manager of the profiles you create, but please add the African American Sticker so we can track these profiles. Please always add at least one source and use maintenance categories as needed.
- Add the African American Sticker to all profiles of people in the community so we can watch over the profiles and watch as our number of profiles grows. Use this template:{{African-American Sticker}}. It should be placed below the Biography heading.
- Add well cited, primary sources to all profiles, including the Unsourced and Needs Sources categories. See this help page for more information about good sourcing: Sources.
- Write biographies that tell us about each person and honors their life, including the profiles in the Needs Biography category.
- Add pictures to profiles that are not copyright protected.
- Look for duplicates and propose merges.
- Add categories based on things such as location, occupation, military activity, notable status, event participation.
- Propose people (or a group of people) who need profiles created.
Maintenance Categories
Please see our help page for maintenance categories for a list of the categories and guidelines for using them.
Teams
We have several teams that focus on specific aspects of profile improvement. See their pages for full details.
Arborists Team
- Searches for duplicate profiles and proposes merges.
- Completes proposed merges that have passed the 30 day mark.
- Researches unmerged matches in order to either reject them or complete the merges.
Connectors Team
- See: Connectors Page
- The Connectors Team creates peripheral family members (parents, children, spouses) in order to connect people to each other and to the global Tree.
- Consider joining the USBH Connecting Challenge
Data Doctors Team
- The Data Doctor team works together to use tools that seek out errors on our site in order to improve profiles.
Sourcerers Team
- See: Sourcerers Page
- The Sourcerers team adds sources to unsourced and under-sourced profiles so that they are as fully sourced as possible.
Notables Team
- See: Notables Page
- The Notables Team within Profile Improvement, strives to identify significant Black Americans and to create genealogically sound profiles for them. It does not try to duplicate Wikipedia pages but to publish information that connects notables to their ancestors and descendants.
Challenges and Events
Connecting Challenge
- The goal of the month-long USBH Connecting Challenge is to add as many profiles for the Black community as possible to WikiTree to increase representation and improve connection.
Weekend Clean Up Sprints
- The goal of the once-a-month weekend sprints is to work together as a project to meet specific goals in a short amount of time. Each sprint will have a different goal.
Sticker and Project Box
To honor the heritage of African American family, please use the African-American Sticker. This sticker is for profiles of people who lived in the USA only. To add this sticker to a profile, enter {{African-American Sticker}} somewhere below the heading "Biography." That will give you this:
Our project box is {{US Black Heritage}} which will give you:
| ... ... ... is a part of US Black history. Join: US Black Heritage Project Discuss: black_heritage |
This template is for use only on profiles that need to be managed by the project. They are not for every single African-American person.
