The USBH Sourcerers Team is part of the US Black Heritage Profile Improvement Team.
As part of the Honor Code WikiTree members sign when they join this community, we commit to sourcing the information we add to profiles so that they are as accurate as possible. Despite this, some profiles get created without sources or do not have enough sources to give information about a person's whole life. US Black Heritage Project's Sourcerers team works to add sources to the profiles of African American people to honor them by telling the full story of their life.

Find Profiles That Need Sources
Unsourced
- Profiles that have NO sources would count towards WikiTree-wide challenges and events like Source-a-Thons, the month-long Sourcerers Challenge that happens every month, and the weekly Saturday Sourcing Sprints. See the pages for these challenges for more details and rules. See post about which profiles count as unsourced for these challenges.
- Places to find unsourced profiles:
- US Black Heritage Project, Unsourced Profiles category
- If you'd like to narrow the search down to a specific location or to profiles you manage, you can use this WikiTree+ search. In the text box on the left, add a location or your WikiTree ID. Then click on the blue "Get Profiles" box on the left. Example of a location search: Texas profiles.
- WikiTree+ Search for profiles in other unsourced categories that also have the {{African-American Sticker}}. Follow the link then click on the blue "Get Profiles" box on the left.
- If you'd like to narrow this down to a specific state or to profiles you manage, add the state name or your WikiTree ID to the Text box on the left. For example: Georgia profiles.
Under-sourced
- Profiles that have at least one source but are not yet fully sourced are found in the US Black Heritage Project, Needs Sources category. Once a profile has the basic genealogical records that would have been available during their lifetime (vital records, census records, etc.), they can be removed from this category.
- If you'd like to find under-sourced profiles from a specific state or ones that you manage, you can use this WikiTree+ Search. Add the state name or your WikiTree ID to the text box on the left, then click the blue "Get Profiles" button. Example: Texas profiles.
Needs Native American Source
- The Needs Native American Source category is for profiles of any African-Americans with rumors of Native American heritage without a primary source for it listed on the profile. Sources such as a Native American census or tribal roll need to be found before adding Native American stickers or categories. If such primary sources are found and added to the profile, then this category can be removed. See the Native Americans Project Reliable Sources Page for help in finding sources for these profiles.
Adding Sources
Please add as many genealogical sources as you can to each profile. See the Sources help page for more information.
There are several browser extensions available from independent developers that help rapidly create source citations for WikiTree. As of 2022, two of the most frequently used are WikiTree Sourcer and WikiTree BEE.
Update Categories
After you have added sources to a profile, please update the appropriate categories at the top of the edit box:
- If you have added at least one source to an unsourced profile, remove the [[Category:US Black Heritage Project, Unsourced Profiles]] category from the top of the profile, along with any other unsourced categories and the {{Unsourced}} template.
- If you added one or more sources to an unsourced profile but it still needs more sources, add the [[Category:US Black Heritage Project, Needs Sources]] category above the "Biography" heading.
- If a profile now has all of the basic genealogical records that would have existed during their lifetime (vital records, census records, etc.), you can remove the [[Category:US Black Heritage Project, Needs Sources]] category.
Consider adding other maintenance categories to help identify further work that needs to be done. These categories go above the "Biography" heading. Some categories that might be helpful while sourcing:
- [[Category:US Black Heritage Project, Needs Biography]]: for profiles that don't have a biography or need a significant update to the biography after a lot of sources have been added.
- [[Category:US Black Heritage Project, Needs Profiles Created]]: for profiles that have sources that give information about other family members who don't yet have profiles (i.e. census records, etc.).
Information for Non-Project Members
If you have found an Unsourced profile of an African American person, please add the category [[Category:US Black Heritage Project, Unsourced Profiles]] to the profile. This is the easiest way for our project to find unsourced profiles.
Statistics
These statistics may not represent all of the work we do as Sourcerers. The numbers will go up from time to time as we identify pockets of profiles that need sourcing and add them to our maintenance categories. There may also be big jumps in numbers the after 'Thons. That's okay! More profiles in these categories get us one step closer to sourcing them and having a healthier global family tree that commemorates and honors our ancestors.
