US Black Heritage Project

For applicants looking for family tree building help, please complete the Family Builder request form.

Family Builders are experienced US Black Heritage researchers who create family trees from scratch or take existing trees out to the next generation(s) for WikiTree members with Black heritage.

If you would like to help Family Builders with their research, you can follow the tag family_builders and watch for research request posts in g2g.

How Does the Family Builders Program Work?

  1. Anyone wanting to have their family tree built from scratch or extended, will fill out the Family Builder request form.
  2. Applicants will be placed on a waiting list on the Family Builder Spreadsheet.
  3. The next available Family Builder will send a message to the next person on the waiting list.
  4. The Family Builder will ask for family information to get started. We must have enough information to get us back to the 1950 census in order to help.
  5. The Family Builder will research and add all the main ancestors up to the 2nd great grandparent level. If they wish to keep going, that's fine, but we only promise up to this generation if the information is available.
  6. The Family Builder will show the applicant how to create the profiles for the siblings on each generation based on sources and how to add those sources. We ask the applicant to create these profiles themselves.
  7. A Final end-of-work letter will be sent giving recommendations for additional profile work and research.

What We Do

  1. Build or extend any family tree with US Black heritage to at least the 2nd great grandparent generation (if enough information is available).
  2. Add the tree to WikiTree (we will add the main couples for each generation and help the member add the siblings of each person based on the sources we will give them).
  3. Help people transfer existing trees from another platform.
  4. Help new members make the best use of WikiTree.
  5. Show new members we help how to connect with others at WikiTree to further their research.
  6. We help new members share their family tree information, while addressing their privacy concerns.

Note: Black heritage is defined as ancestors who have been in the USA for several generations and people who likely have ancestors who were enslaved in the USA. Our project doesn't have the expertise to build African or African Diaspora family trees outside the USA.

FAQs

  • Who does USBH Family Builders help?
    • Anyone with US Black heritage who wishes to build their family tree on WikiTree.
    • Anyone who has enough family information to start with to get us back to the 1950 census.
  • Do people need to be WikiTree members to apply for help from a Family Builder?
    • Yes, they will need to become a member in order to have their tree built on WikiTree.
  • Does the whole family tree need to be Black?
    • No. We recognize families are diverse. We will build out the entire family tree (based on the above criteria) to the best of our ability regardless of the race/ethnicity. If we don't have the ability to work on certain branches, we will make recommendations of where you can go for help.
