Profile Improvement Track
The Profile Improvement track of our project is about creating, improving, managing, sourcing, and connecting profiles belonging to the African-American community.
The following items are part of the US Black Heritage Profile Improvement set to get you prepared for working on project teams. These exercises need to be completed within the suggested time frame, however, they should not take more than a couple of hours to actually complete.
For this section of the PATH, please bookmark and review these three help pages before doing the exercises:
1. USBH Maintenance Categories The visual explaining the "Profile Creation Cycle" is very helpful.
2. Profile Improvement Project Resources Especially, review these sections::
- Copyright and copying Text
- How to collaborate with Projects if a Project is co-managing a profile.
- How to initiate a merge (Help:Matching and Merging FAQ)
EXERCISE #1 Time given to complete: 24 hours
STEP ONE - Create a new profile from the 1880 census project.
- Create a profile for only one member of the family.
Use this checklist to make sure you have all elements on the profile completed.
- Add the AA sticker.
- Add birth date and locations (even uncertain ones) (Help:Location Fields)
- Use Certain/Uncertain status where appropriate (Help:Uncertain)
- Write a biography with at least one more heading.
- Add sources for the facts and use the WikiTree Sourcer to create the source citation.
- Add categories and at least one USBH Maintenance Category
- Link the new profile to the correct place on the spreadsheet.
- When you are done send an email with the subject heading "Profile Improvement Review Exercise #1" to request a review from a guide. Include a link to the 1880 census spreadsheet you worked from AND the URL of the profile you created. Use the email noted above under Recommended Tools.
STEP TWO
- Create profiles for the rest of the household
- Send an email with the subject " Profile Improvement, Full Household " with links to those profiles to request a review, as well as, the team you've chosen to join. Take a look at our US Black Heritage Project Teams if you need a reminder.
SPECIAL NOTE If you've chosen the Heritage Exchange Team, be aware that this is the advanced track of the PATH. If you feel you are ready and plan to do a majority of work in this area, indicate that in your email and review this page: US Black Heritage PATH - Heritage Exchange. Someone from the team will get you started.
EXERCISE #2 Time given to complete: 24 hours
Please review our Notables page and US Black Heritage Project Notable Profile Standards.
In this exercise you will create a new profile for a notable from this spreadsheet. Be sure to look at the tabs at the bottom. DO NOT CREATE ANY LIVING NOTABLES.
- Check to see if a profile has been created for that person before creating the profile.
- Follow the Notable Profile Standards checklist when creating the profile.
- Use the above help pages to style, format, and categorize the profile.
- Write a short biography
- When complete, be sure to add the WIKI ID of the profile to the USBH Notables spreadsheet on the Proposed Notables tab (you are given access to this spreadsheet after you complete the volunteer form). Then email the URL link to the profile with the subject Notables Review to have a Notables Team review your profile.
- Login to request to the join the Trusted List so that you can edit and add images.
