Goals of the US Black Heritage Project PATH
- To teach you how to navigate WikiTree and follow the standards of profile creation and improvement.
- To teach you the standards of the US Black Heritage Project and the Heritage Exchange Program.
The PATH Process
- Pathfinders (You) will be assigned a PATH Guide who will work one-on-one with you.
- Using a checklist, the Guide will assess your WikiTree knowledge by looking at your existing family profiles.
- Based on that work, they will make recommendations and may ask you to make improvements.
- You will be asked to create and improve one new profile from a US Black Heritage list of notable profiles. The Guide will assess the completeness of this profile.
- Once you have shown proficiency in all areas from the checklist, you will graduate from the PATH Track and receive a completion sticker.
- You need to show proficiency in each track before moving on to the next one.
#a New Member Track
This track is required for all people who are new to WikiTree.
You will be asked to check your knowledge of the information given on the New Member How-To tutorial. Some of this information is covered in the Profile Improvement Track, but you will only be required to show your knowledge in those areas once.
Your Guide will check your existing family profiles for these basic skills:
- Create a profile with date(s) and location(s)
- Add a primary source
- Link another profile on a profile. Example: [[Doe-124|John Doe]]
- Adding categories and Stickers
- Avoid creating duplicates, searching for existing profiles
#1 Profile Improvement Track
This track is required for all new US Black Heritage Project members
You will be asked to start with one of your watchlist profiles in need of improvement. Then you will be asked to create and improve one new profile for a person who is covered by the US Black Heritage Project.
Your Guide will check these profiles for these skills:
- Setting status for locations, dates, and relationships
- Write biographies with appropriate headings (narrative style or timeline)
- Add sources for the facts, use inline citations.
- Add at least one non-USBH category (cemetery, location, occupation, education)
- Knows how to find and review the change logs and the knowledge of how to restore a change gone wrong.
- Knows the rules for working with notable profiles (who manages notables, living family members of notables)
- Understands copyright rules for images, documents, and Copying Text guidelines
And will help you:
- Know how to collaborate with USBH Project members (GoogleGroups/Discord/G2G)
- Be familiar with Project Resources and how to navigate them
#2 Heritage Exchange Track
This track is required for all members who wish to create and improve profiles for slave owners and enslaved ancestors.
You will be asked to create 3 sets of profiles/free space pages
- One slave owner profile with at least two linked enslaved ancestor profiles.
- A second slave owner profile with at least two linked enslaved ancestor profiles.
- One slave owner profile (or use one of the two created from #1 and #2) and a linked space page for his/her list of documents for unnamed slaves.
Your Guide will check these profiles for these skills:
- Understanding of naming conventions for enslaved ancestors
- How to create a slave owner profile
- How to create an enslaved ancestor profile
- How to link the slave owner/enslaved ancestor profiles together
- How to properly name free space pages
- Chooses appropriate Heritage Exchange Categories
FAQs
- How long does it take to complete a PATH track?
- We can only estimate at this point since the program is new, but a long time/regular user of WikiTree should easily be able to complete a track in one week. For new WikiTree members it may take 2-4 weeks.
- Can I work on project profiles before I finish one of the PATH tracks?
- Yes, as long as you are actively working toward completing one of the tracks.
- Is there anything I can't work on before I finish one of the PATH tracks?
- If you are new to WikiTree, we ask you not to work on notable profiles until you finish the New Member track.
- If you are new to Heritage Exchange work, we ask you to have your PATH Guide oversee your work as you begin creating these profiles until you have completed the Heritage Exchange track.
- If I have already completed the PIP Voyage, do I have to complete the Profile Improvement Track?
- Yes, because you will be learning US Black Heritage Project standards. If you have completed the PIP Voyage, the Profile Improvement Track shouldn't take you very long to complete as it is a shorter program.
- Login to request to the join the Trusted List so that you can edit and add images.
- Private Messages: Contact the Profile Managers privately: Emma MacBeath and US Black Heritage Project WikiTree. (Best when privacy is an issue.)

- Public Q&A: These will appear above and in the Genealogist-to-Genealogist (G2G) Forum. (Best for anything directed to the wider genealogy community.)
You need to be a member of the project in order to take the Path. I will send you a PM on how to join the project. Gina
I would like to start the profile improvement track but do not know how to start. I have been entering source information but would like to make sure I am doing it correctly.
