5 Minute Tasklist for US Black Heritage Project

Are you looking for some quick ways to help the US Black Heritage Project meet our goals? Here are some things you could do that (hopefully!) take five minutes or less, depending on your experience in different areas. Completing even just one of these tasks on one or two profiles whenever you have a few minutes to spare would be a big help to the project.

If you're not a member of the US Black Heritage Project, we'd love for you to work on these items too. Please check with the project before starting to make sure you're working according to the standards set by the project to keep things consistent across WikiTree.

Thanks for all you do!

Profile Improvement

  • African American Sticker: add {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles you manage/create for Americans with Black heritage. It goes right below the Biography heading. We also need the sticker added to the profiles listed on this page of branches needing improvement.
  • Birthplace: Add a birthplace to the data fields of these profiles. For profiles of enslaved ancestors named in a document like a will, our policy is to use the location of that document and mark the birth location as uncertain.
  • General Categories: Add categories based on things such as birth/death/residence/burial location, occupation, military activity, notable status, and event participation to any African American profile.
  • Maintenance Categories: Add USBH Project maintenance categories to any African American profiles you manage or create. We'd also like to focus on adding maintenance categories to orphaned profiles for people living in the 1870's.

Data Doctors

  • Easy template formatting errors: 841, 842, and possibly 843, though some of these 843 errors may be more advanced.
  • Easy heading formatting errors: 821, 822, 823, 824.
  • Simple reference tag errors: 861, 862, 866, 868.
  • Linked to merged FindAGrave ID: 586 Most of these just need to have the memorial ID updated to the new number. Going to the linked memorial should redirect you to the new page, and you can get the new memorial ID there.
  • Prefix in First Name: Warning 723. Many African Americans have names like "Prince", "Major", or "Queen" that get flagged as prefixes. Check the sources to be sure this was actually their given name, then mark the suggestion as false. If it is a prefix (a title, not a name), then move it to the prefix field.

Connectors

  • Needs profiles created: Add family member profiles to profiles in the USBH Needs Profiles Created category. These profiles are supposed to have records that can be used to create family member profiles, like a census record or marriage record that names other family members.

Notables

  • Suggest Notables: If you have created or found a profile for a notable African-American, the project would like to manage or co-manage the profile. Please answer on this post and tell us about the profile. Someone from the project will contact you about adding the project as manager/co-manager. You can also answer on this post if you have a recommendation for a notable who needs to have a profile created.
  • Add categories: Project members should have access to the Notables spreadsheet. Check the first tab "Notables Needs Work" for the column "Has Notable Categories" to find Notables that need to be checked for categories. Add appropriate categories to the profile then change the status in the "Has Notable Categories" column in the spreadsheet.

Heritage Exchange

  • Heritage Exchange Category for Slavery-Related profiles: Please add [[Category:USBH Heritage Exchange]] above the Biography heading for profiles that you manage or create for any persons who were enslaved or who enslaved others. This lets our Heritage Exchange team know to come by and add some more categories/slavery-related information to help descendants of enslaved ancestors to be able to find them before emancipation.
  • County, State, Slave Owner category for slave owners: This would be in addition to the Heritage Exchange category. An example: [[Category:Charleston County, South Carolina, Slave Owners]]
  • County, State, Slave category for enslaved persons: Also in addition to the Heritage Exchange category. An example:[[Category:Charleston County, South Carolina, Slaves]]
