United States Law Enforcement Agencies
Types of Law Enforcement Agencies
- There are three basic categories of law enforcement agencies: local, state, and federal.
- Local law enforcement agencies include police and sheriff departments, and local service facilities.
- State agencies include the state or highway patrol.
- Federal agencies include a wide range of law enforcement agencies to maintain law and public order related to matters affecting the country as a whole. While the majority of federal law enforcement employees work for the departments of Justice and Homeland Security, there are dozens of other federal law enforcement agencies under other executive departments, as well as under the legislative and judicial branches of the federal government.
- There are agencies whose mission is to provide a law enforcement function and there are also agencies who have a law enforcement department or component within their larger agency.
