Draft preamble for the Unconnected Report

Introduction

The England Project - Growing an increasingly accurate branch of Wikitree's single family tree

Our Project Team strives to grow the England branch of Wikitree's global tree and to improve the quality of England profiles.

Wikitree’s mission is to grow an accurate single family tree that connects us all, either by common ancestors or by marriage. About 9% of England profiles are unconnected. Each time we make a connection, we improve the tree.

This report has been produced to help members who want to work on England’s largest unconnected branches, either at country or county level. By linking these branches to the main tree, we have the greatest impact on our Unconnected numbers.

The lists below shows branches that contain the greatest number of profiles at England and county level. In the ‘England’ section, a profile is counted if there is an ‘event’ (a birth, marriage or death) in England; in the county sections, the profile must contain an ‘event’ in that county. We have only counted 18th century profiles and later; earlier profiles can be more challenging to work on.

To work on a profile, click on the ‘lead name’ which is the first created profile in that branch. You will be linked to a Wikitree+ report that shows all the profiles in that branch. You will often find that the branch contains a larger number of profiles than is shown on our list, as there will typically be some profiles in a branch that have no ‘events’ in England or that county.

The reports are refreshed midweek using data that has been downloaded from the Wikitree system at the weekend. You may occasionally find that, when you open a branch to start working on it, someone has already made a connection; if so, pick another branch from the list.

If you are keen to develop your connecting skills, you may find this Connecting How To page useful. If you enjoy connecting, you may want to join our Connectors team. Find out more on the Connectors Team Page.

Notes

(Using Lancashire as an example)

  1. A Lancashire profile is a profile with a birth, marriage or death in Lancashire.
  2. Count all 18th, 19th and 20th century Lancashire Unconnected profiles
  3. (Unlike the sample table below) show the top 20 Unconnected branches for each county (but ideally have this as a changeable number so we can adapt according to demand)
  4. Allow England to be set at a different count
  5. 'Oldest profile' = Earliest created profile in that tree (as this is the least likely to be superseded if more profiles are added to the branch)
  6. List to be ordered in descending order of tree size
  7. The TreeID changes each week, but is only used for the one week's analysis so is not an issue
  8. Set the output page size to 100 so it's easier to scan down the names in the tree.
  9. Sample Lancashire Table below (headings etc to follow style of England Unknowns
