Known families
Duttons of New England
- First known ancestors: Thomas Dutton, born abt. 1621 in England, died abt. 1687 in Middlesex, Massachusetts, and Susannah Dutton (abt.1626-1684), maiden name uncertain, believed to be Palmer.
- Immigration: John Dutton, father of Thomas Dutton, immigrated to Massachusetts from England abt. 1630.
- Y-DNA haplogroup: R-M269 (haplotype known to 67 markers but no further SNP testing done), does not match with other Dutton groups.
Early settlement throughout New England. Descendants today are througout United States.
Duttons of Pennsylvania
- First known ancestors: John Dutton, born 1647, Overton, Cheshire, England, died 1693 in Aston Township, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Mary (Darlington) Dutton (1658-1717).
- Immigration Immgirated to Chester, Pennsylvania, from England abt. 1683.
- Y-DNA haplogroup: Multiple, unrelated Y-DNA lines claim to descend.
- R-DF98 — Descendants of two lines match, John → Thomas → Richard, and John → John → Kingsman → Kingsman.
- R-M222 — Descendants of David Dutton (abt.1756-1836), identified by Cope as a son of Kingsman Dutton Sr. (abt.1711-bef.1765). Haplotype known to 37 markers; does not match other groups. Some SNP testing done. More testing needed.
- R-M269 — Descendants of Francis Dutton (bef.1745-bef.1840), identified by Cope as a son of Kingsman Dutton Sr. (abt.1711-bef.1765). Haplotype known to 25 markers; does not match other groups. More testing needed.

Duttons of Charles County, Maryland
- First known ancestors: Thomas Dutton, born bef. 1660, Cheshire, England? Died abt. 1695, Charles County, Maryland.
- Immigration: Thomas Dutton immigrated to Maryland, probably from Cheshire, in 1680.
- Y-DNA haplogroup: R-DF98, matches haplotype of John Dutton of Pennsylvania R-DF98 line.
Surviving Dutton lines are from Thomas's son Matthew Dutton. Some descendants went to Missouri; others have remained in Southern Maryland.
Zachariah Dutton
- First known ancestors: Zachariah Dutton, born abt. 1750, Charles County, Maryland, died 1829, Granville County, North Carolina.
- Y-DNA haplogroup: E-L17.
Offshoot of Dutton of Charles County, Maryland, from an apparent non-paternity event. Descendants went to North Carolina and Alabama, and migrated west. One line went to Ohio and Wisconsin.
